My D70, it shows no indication of a posi/locking feature to the diff...so if its a factory Powerlock(?) whats wrong with it? clutches or what?
Or assuming its an open unit, whats a reliable unit to add to the open diff to get a posi set up. I was thinking a Detroit or a Powertrax unit to put in the open carrier?

I have to do some brake work, so I'll get into it then and see what I got going on. I sure like my det in the 14bff, that's why I was thinking of going that route if its an open carrier.
If its clutches, I either have to rebuild that unit or replace carrier right?

D70HD has 4 different carriers.

2 are the one piece with open spiders and the other 2 are the 2-piece Powr-Lok carriers. The reason for 2 different on both are the gear splits of which 4.10 and higher gears are one and the 4.56 and lower ratios are the other.

Only if your carrier is the 2-piece then a DL will work and this is the cheaper route. If you have the 1-piece carrier, then you'll have to shell out more coin for the whole DL which is the whole carrier assembly.

I rebuilt a 70HD with new clutches once. Was very easy to do. Got the new clutches and special addtive oil off eBay and when I tore the carrier apart, I just cleaned everything back up with brake cleaner and soaked the clutches in a pan of the additive for a while before reassembly. Just make sure the bolts are all tightened to specs, too. And to use more additive in a D70HD because it holds a lot more oil so you'll need more additive in order to get the clutches to work properly. I can't remember what the ounce/pint/quart are for this rear so do some homework unless someone else chimes in.

got it Wes...I've played with a couple clutch pak setups before so no surprise there, but the difference in carriers is what I really need to look at then, to see where I need to go from there. I got 4.10s in it and will keep those barring any surprises. Oh,and are these carriers a challenge to get out of the housing also? Do I need a spreader, and I realize if I change carriers I will have to do gear setup again, just wondering about pulling rebuilding/adding a Det will I need to do gear setup again?

I've pulled carriers/gears out of D44's and 60's without a spreader but I had to put a little muscle into it. I wouldn't justify the added expense of a spreader if you feel confident to do it yourself.

I can't say that I've ever seen a Chevy dually with a posi rear, has anybody?

I've only had 14's and they've been the govbomb type.

I dismantled one once. It was the 4.56 Powr Lok with the worn clutches I described above. The spindle was chewed up to hell because of loose nuts causing the whole wheel bearing assembly to come off. End result was the inner bearing being "welded" to the spindle from the heat of the dragging and a BFH would not even budge it loose. So I tore it apart, cleaned the R&P, got new clutches off eBay and rebuilt the whole unit. Resold everything back out on eBay, too.

So yeah, they're out there in the dually trucks alright.

I believe they did come in 2wd duallies, but not 4wd.
