I was just killing time looking on CL and found what seems to be a good deal on a posi/locker/limited slip removed from a 90's Ford with a D70 read axle. So I guess I have two real questions.... what type of unit would this be? It has a speed sensor reluctor on the ring gear flange. Also, would this fit the 70HD in my '79? I thought that some of the D70 variations didn't interchange many parts.

Not sure on the new unit. A Dana powr lok was made for those earlier D70s, it’s clutched but functions similar to a Detroit
@76zimmer might know a thing about that

Some of the earlier D70’s had a 2 pc carrier that would accept a Detroit but I think they phased out by the 80’s.

As far as fit between a D70 and D70HD, I’ve seen it done but some (maybe all?) of the non HD carriers need to be machined deeper on one bearing trunnion to allow heavy shimming to shift the carrier over.

Check the Chevy forum on Pirate4x4, there’s a big, really good thread on D70’s.

I also forgot to mention, it had 4.10 gears on it. My '79 has factory 4.56 gears. I can't remember the gear split, if any on the D70.

Headed over to read on Pirate...

Looks like a power lock. Mid 80’s Fords used the Dana 70U. 4.10 and 4.56 use a different carrier. That is where the gear split is on a Dana 70.

2nd power lok posi unit .

nock the tone ring off its just light fit snug .

spline count on fords sometimes was 32 over the gm 35 so watch out for that . there easy to rebuild and swap the spider gears for the correct spline count .

someone got a little crazy pulling the bearings off but it will clean up .

Thanks folks. Looks like it's all wrong for me, lol. Not only is it on the other side of the carrier break, a Google search says the 70U has an offset pinion to accommodate taller gears and the 70HD has a D80 carrier and bearings.

But does it take much work to use in a 70HD?

could maybe be used for a jana76 kit swap on a 60 front or rear ? ?

Well there's an idea. I like how upfront those instructions are, lol.

It's funny, the ideas that can start running through your head all because of a $50 posi. That would be cool to do in the front of my K10/30 shortbed, but in reality, it would be silly to do that before even upgrading the stubs. Although I did really want to have some kind of limited slip up there first...

Carl Jantz is probably the most knowledgeable person there is on using Dana lockers in something that it wasn’t intended to be in. Seems like I remember watching a video that he made that he said you can use about any Dana 70 locker in most Dana 70’s if you use the correct bearing, spacers and shim.

The mid 80’s Dana 70 Ford axles I have seen were 35 spline. Dana 70U has a really smooth casting with nearly no extra support ribs like the Dana 70HD and Dana 80 have.

The difference between and 70 and 70hd is .120 on each carrier bearing journal. The to use in an HD you need to machine it. To use a dana 80 posi in an HD you just sleeve the bolt holes.
Here are the deck height for both 70hd and 80.

To split hairs, technically, the D80 uses D70HD parts since the 80 was developed 10+ years later. :D

I have a J76 conversion in my front D60 (w/ a Power Lock), it’s really cool but not for the faint of heart as one of the modifications might make it tough to go back to D60 parts afterwards.
