ok guys pulled distributor after marking all positions replaced pickup coil which was all to pieces now it will not go back in the same position it came out at,if i turn it another round it slips right in......any suggestions before i have to call mechanic:dunno:

The dist gear is helical, so usually when you pull it out it slightly rotates the oil pump drive as it comes out. Sometimes it just doesn't want to mesh going back in. You can use a long screwdriver to slightly rotate the oil pump drive one way or the other, then try and stab the dist again. Just don't try to force anything.

that worked like a charm thanks, does anybody know a quick easy way to check fuel pump?

I was expecting to read a story about how your dad burned up your distributor. :tongue1:

Depends on what your checking? If to see if it's working roll your window down and turn the key to the on position. Listen for the pump to cycle off. Assuming it's an electric pump.

If mechanical pop the feed line off the carb and turn the engine over it should pour fuel.

Back to electric Install a pressure gauge behind the TBI most systems run about 9 to 14 PSI. A gauge and adapter will cost around 40 to 50 bucks. You can see where my gauge is mounted right before the TBI body.

You can also check pressure just after the filter with a gauge and T set up as well. If your pump kicks in and you have low pressure after the filter then replace the filter. if after the new filter you still have low pressure replace the pump but don't put in a cheap after market get a Delco one.

A bit old, this the '87 with EFI I assume?

You can run 12V to the red wire hanging off the relay and listen for it running if you aren't worried about fuel pressure.

If you want to check fuel pressure, have to borrow a tester from Autozone or by one, and hook it up in the fuel lines. no easy way to test TBI fuel pressure, there is no factory "tap" for it like port injection has.
