I didn't even consider that you had manual steering!
This upgrade will make it a whole new truck! At least it felt like it on my old C10. A 4x4 should be a greater improvement in my mind.

Yeah, I don't know why I didn't do this sooner

Power Steering conversion progress:

PS pump bracket from Summit Racing didn't work, placed the pump high so that the alternator belt clashed with the pump. Also, the length of the bolts to mount it to the block and the "depth" of the bracket clashed with the alternator belt. Located an original 67-72 bracket from Tremayne Lee, when that arrives I will chase down some bolts and get it installed.

The Jeep intermediate steering shaft I bought to replace the rag joint didn't fit the 13/16" spline on the new Redhead steering box. I called Offroad Design, who sent me to Borgeson, who gave me a list of part numbers and sent me to Summit Racing.

Mushroomed the drag link rod end when I was removing it from the pitman arm, so I’ll grab a new one from O’Reilly on my way home from work today.

Hopefully I have discovered all my hurdles and it’s all downhill from here. Still wondering if the Auto Zone supply & return lines will fit…

I'm having a little trouble getting the old pitman arm onto the new steering box, seems like a really tight fit, tighter than the fit on the old box. Anyone have any tips or tricks to get it on?

No tech other than to look at each set of splines for a burr.

Should the pitman arm from a non-power steering box fit a power steering box? The splines and the notch look the same. Like I said above, it's just a little tighter fit.

I honestly don't know, but I would think that if they are close, then it's supposed to be the same. I do think that manufacturing tolerances can be different over the decades and can give you some troubles. You could look for a new one for a decent price and see if it fits better, or consider using a combination of files to open up the hole.

Pulled the box back off the truck and checked everything with calipers.
The shaft on the old box (non-power) is 1.125"-
The shaft on the new box (power) is 1.25"-
1/8" difference
Who knew....
Don't think I'm gonna fit that on with force or file.

As stated previously, the PS pump bracket from summit would not work without me relocating the alternator... Tremayne Lee aka Tremayne's Trucks had a factory bracket. I fooled around with the bracket not completely understanding how to install it, finally realized that the rear of the bracket bolts to one of the motor mount bolts. still trying to get all the bolts started, then I'll move on to the next thing.

Also pulled apart my steering column and drilled a hole for the set screw on the Borgeson u-joint.

We had light rain on and off Saturday afternoon, so I built a little hooch to work under. The PS pump bracket was a fight all the way. I had to hook on the harbor freight engine hoist and take apart the driver side motor mount. Ended up using a stud to catch the rear bracket mounting point. I got the intermediate shaft cut to length and installed and put the steering column back in. Installed pitman arm and drag link, and the PS pulley.

Just need find a belt that will fit, hook up my hoses, check torque on all the hardware, splice that wire I pinched when I pulled the steering column, then fill and bleed the system and I should be good to go.

OK, power steering conversion is done, and it is awesome.

I finished putting everything together Thursday night and filled the system with fluid. Full disclosure: there was some sawzall activity. Redheads bleeding instructions said to fill it, turn the wheels lock-to-lock 15-20 times, then let it sit for a few hours. Checked it the next morning and it was still at the "Full Cold" line, so we fired it up.

Seems to be working great, 35s on 10" wide wheels & I can turn the wheel lock-to-lock with one finger

Got in a trip to FL panhandle over the long weekend. About an hour from home, the boys were napping hard & I was trying to calculate if I could make it without another gas stop when traffic came to a halt. Boys woke up, and one started having a meltdown, so we pulled off and pulled over at an abandoned sandpit to stretch our legs. Boys had a blast digging in the dirt & throwing rocks in the water.
