put the trans in and i cant get it to go in reverse...i know its a shifter problem...no grinding or anything just cant get it in reverse...suggestions??i think the syncro isnt lined up or something

there is no sincro in reverse. try puting it into one of the other 4 gears then into reverse if the engine doesn't run. If it does, then double clutch it.

did you just pull the top cover off? and maybe didnt line it back on right? the thing is a bi!ch to line back up.

sounds like maybe the reverse fork and collar didnt line up right. did you have the shifter half way into reverse while putting the cover back in? you can slide the reverse idler gear around to help make it line up easier.

sounds like you missed the alignment of the collar and shift fork. Its really easy to miss when assembling these transmissions. I missed mine too while assembling, ended up with permanent reverse in neutral and a stuck tranny in any forward gear. Pull the top, realign, be happy!

i personally didnt put the trans in..the shop where all my work got done put it in...they said they had it in reverse pulling it out the shop so it will go in just not real sure whats going on now

Try the double clutch method then until she goes in. Might even want to roll the truck backwards a little bit if its possible and it should be able to drop into gear.

Here's the deal. The trans didnt have any pins in the cap to lock shifter in palce. We stuck two bolts in there just enuf to move in it around the shop.We did not remove the cap(been there, done that, and know it's a bitch).I had a spare cap and robbed the pins out of it and put in his cap.The truck was in the shop when I done it and it was not moved after I put the pins in the cap, until we were done with the truck and were tryin to load it.It did have rev before I put the pins in because we had it in and out of the shop 3-4 time.

My thinkin is maybe the pins are in too far and not lettin the shifter go into the cap deep enuf to engage rev or maybe the lenth of the shifter might be different.Maybe newer trans older shifter.:dunno:

Try drivin the pins out a little and see if the shifter goes into the cap deeper. With the two bolts we had just loosely stuck in there it had to be all the way in.

This could be the problem. I know the tranny is good. I removed the roll pins and used them on another tranny. Usually the pins limit side to side in gear slop (shifter slop) but they could be limiting how much tension in on the shifter cap. DO NOT remove the top cover. You didn't drop anything down inside?

john did that shifter you gave me come out of morgans trans?

I don't think so. His was chrome, I think I gave you one I got from Tim. They all should work, adjust the position of the roll pins and see if that helps. If not I'll help you find another shifter, at least to try.

still a no go...taked the shifter ball in place tonight cause the welds were broke and nothing...messed with roll pins,nothing...i dont get it...im thinking its the wrong shifter

I'm not certain but I 'm pretty sure that there is a difference between the cast iron cover shifters and the aluminum cover ones. I don't think the two could be easily confused or installed by mistake though. Does your shifter even move into the reverse position? If it does go to the reverse position but you still dont have it in gear then you may have the wrong shifter. until you answer that I am with the other guys though about the pins. That seems to be the only thing that changed and now it doesnt work. however if the shifters were mixed up then that would be the problem.

it wont even go it nothing.like its stopping right before reverse...this trans had a chrome shifter on it in the truck it was in not its got a black one.dont even ask where the old shifter is

I wont ask. The shifter that came out of there; was it exceptionally long with a couple bends in it? Is the new black one shorter and less bent? You are probably right about it being the wrong shifter then. Hey, what year of truck is that transmission from?
