I gotta get my K5 tested at a test only station. Not really a big deal as the one I always go to is a test only. Problem, last time I smogged I barely passed my HC was 1 below the limit and Nox was kinda high. Question, my exhaust is hammered as in aft of the cat there are many holes in the piping. Can this be one of the culprits to my high readings? I think I also need a cat as with the muffler not really in the system the exhaust is pretty quiet:o. The engine does not smoke or use oil could changing the exhaust from the cat all the way back be a reasonable fix for my problem? I also dont know if there is a shop local that can dyno smog a lifted vehicle with 37s:o. Oh all of my smog equipment is installed and functioning properly.

Having a bunch of holes in the exhaust will mess up the readings.
Fix the exhaust, Change the oil, maby a tuneup you should pass.

I am pretty sure my HC is from a bad cat but the other readings are what got me thinking about the holes. I think there is some scavenging effect that is pulling outside air in and screwin up the readings at the sensor. I do plan on changing the oil and running a bottle of water absorber (alcohol) I cant remember the brand name we ran it on our boat when I was a kid and I will let it idle in the parking lot while I wait on the guy to put it in the bay.

If you are pulling in outside air, it would lower your PPM of whatever pollutant they are measuring, lowering the readings of said pollutant. (assuming only after O2 sensor/converter leaks)

I know here locally they won't test if they determine you've got exhaust leaks.

I am getting a cat and super 40 from Mudfrog on here in the 3" variety and all my tubing will be from summit as they have the best price I have found so far. My intention is to use ball socket couplings in front of the cat and aft of the muffler to make a 3 piece exhaust system. Summit also has a universal tailpipe kit that is mandrel bent 3" aluminized. The price of all of the supplies is less than what a shop wanted to charge me for doing the pipe with me supplying the cat and muffler. I still need a welder so that will increase my overall cost but in the long run it will pay off:D. When I go with my 56 fronts I will redo the Y pipe with all mandrel bent piping but I will have to wait on that as I will have to piece it together out of mandrel bends and I want to get some time behind the welder before I start that.

This is easy, just move to Illinois. They just passed a law and now no vehicles pre-OBDII (older than 96) have to go for emissions testing. SWEET!!

The wife just told me to go ahead and order my exhaust stuff and then said "this better ****in make it pass". I also get my welder :D. Millermatic 135 and a 40 CF bottle of Argon/CO2. I am still looking for a good place to buy my bottle it seems like $170 for a new bottle with 10 year cert and full with argon /CO2 mix. Is that a fair price for a bottle?

If its the orginal 20 yr old cat, you will definetely see improvement with a new one.
Not only warm it up, make sure the oil is fully warmed up also. Take it out on the freeway and don't shut down until after the test.
One of my previous times, the tech clued me into State O' CA allows for +or- 4* of timing error. Hint; retard it to 5* or 6* instead of 8* BTDC.:D
Oh, and a bottle of "Guaranteed to Pass".

New cat should fix that right up. Remember that welding aluminised is not like the steel we did for your bumpers and winch mount.

It welds like butter. I can think of nothing that is easier to weld.

Get a bottle from gasspro or airliquide. You kinda perminantly rent/borrow for refills.

I can buy an empty brand new from Stoody (a local welding supply shop) and fill it for $22 a pop for 40 SCF. I think that is the way I will go. I like the fact of owning my own bottle.
