Rocko,

What was the final out come of the u-bolts for the u-joints? Did you buy some or use the ones off the front 10?

Congrats on the swap. You could say Im done with mine since I've had it all bolted up and sitting on the wheels ready to drive to the off-road shop to weld it, but that damned Rene talked me into doing it myself!!!!!

Re: DAMN IT RENE!!!!!!!

Ive seen some pretty ugly welds on chevy axle housings.. I dont think they were going for looks, just strength.. seems pretty unlikely that it has been modified in the past, eh??

Re: DAMN IT RENE!!!!!!!

Okay.. on the rear.. I used the front u-joint strap's since the Dana 44 yoke is the pass-through u-bolt strap's.. that go completely through the yoke and use a bolt on both end's..
The Corporate 10 bolt u-joint strap lined right up with the 14 bolt FF..
So... I'm still waiting on getting my front u-joint ubolt's.. But it's just about there.. Just need to beed the blakes..
Doh.. did it again.. Bleed the brakes..

Re: DAMN IT RENE!!!!!!!

YOU GUYS SUCK!! I had my rear end swapped in on Monday but I ran out of time to do the front. It would've been done by now but the neighbors don't like the sound of air tools at night!!.. which is the only time I have to work on the truck. Hey did you guys have any clearance problems with the rear shock mounts on the 14 Bolt? My drivers side shock is hitting the tube and won't line up.

Re: DAMN IT RENE!!!!!!!

Hell SAVAGE!, my shock tube was rubbing on my 10 bolt shock mount. But now that you mention it I haven't put the shocks on yet. Cause I knew I was going to be dropping it back out of the truck.
I have to see if I can use the perches from my 10 bolt if I can get them off without destriying them too.

Re: DAMN IT RENE!!!!!!!

Sounds like your doing things the hard way. You got a air compressor you can get a cut off tool and cut those things off in about 20 minutes. Heck you can buy cut off wheels that will fit a 4 inch electric grinder also. Heck I got a 7.5 for my radial hand saw and have cut up to 1/4 inch plate with it. Have to make several passes but it can be done.
I cut off my purches ground it smooth and rewelded at the angle I needed in about 3 hours. That included removing and installing the axle twice.

AHAhhahahah!!! LOL!!!

Check this out, I did the same thing to my 14 bolt and went through the same crap you went through. It really did take me forever. I grinded all the welds, but still won't come off. I took the 3lb sledge and still no go. I couldn't get my grinder wheel underneath the perches. I tried my sawzall and it appeared to work on the front end and back end of the perches, but I couldn't get the blades in right to get it to work on the sides (b/c of the "(" type shape it has.
Anyhow, I asked Rene what more did I need to do. He suggested the same thing Grim said. "Get a "Cut-Off" wheel for your grinder. The disk will be thin enough to go under the perches. I did that and it took like 10 minutes each perch. I was like WTF!!! Thanks Rene!!! LOL!!

I got pics of the perches off and stuff. I'll post after lunch. I was careful, so I reused them.

Re: DAMN IT RENE!!!!!!!

I can't wait to see this monster! While you're at home putting new toys on your truck, I'm up here in CookeVegas doing homework. How fair is that? My flaming K5 is running again, I've been tooling around the neighborhood in it, trying to get the shift points right on the TV cable. Oh well, I'm out. Good Luck B.

Re: DAMN IT RENE!!!!!!!

I was using the Zip wheel that Rene mentioned to get, and Yes Grimmy I was using Air. The cut wheel diameter was still to large to fit up under the perch with out cutting into the perch too. So it was cutting more than just the weld. so it took alot longer. The hammer sped things up a bit. But I did miss once and made a pot hole in the garage floor. Had to stop and drink a beer and morn over that one.
The only way this would have went quicker would have been to get a grinder that had more HP like 3/4 or 1 HP instead of the 1/2 one I have. Yeah, it will spin at 20,000 RPM's but you put a load on it and it want to puke!!!

Re: DAMN IT RENE!!!!!!!

Hey Boss (or Grim or anyone)

Got a link to a pic of the type of cutoff tool you're talking about? I've got a compressor & would maybe buy the tool. I've also got a cutting torch. Would that be any good??

Re: DAMN IT RENE!!!!!!!

The cut wheel they are talking about it in the tools section of lowes or Home depot. They look like hard grinding disks and they just bolt onto the end of the grinder with a little kit that sits right next to the disks on the shelf.

Re: DAMN IT RENE!!!!!!!

I have helped my brother do this 2 or 3 times on his 12 bolt. Switching it vehicles and the perches needed changing...

But grinding and welding is fun!!!!!
