So someone i know is selling an sm465 with a dana 20 for 120. Ive been debating back and forth on just doing a manual swap instead of a doubler. Been back and forth on this for a while now.

Ive been trying to do some research on the d20 and it seems like a stout case. Really small and short, but is said to have come in 1ton jeep things? It has some good aftermarket on it, terra low kits/ 300m outputs etc.

Is this case a waste of time? should i just go for a 205?

Ive heard alot of arguments that a stock 465/205 is lower than a th350/doubler.... and a whole lot cheaper.

Opinions? :dunno:

A stock 465/205 is nowhere close to a TH350/203/205 gearing wise, you're talking about an effective ~13:1 ratio for the 465/205 and ~21.6:1 for the TH350/203/205 setup.

As for the Dana 20, that is ancient stuff. The Jeep guys see them as stout but they are well below a 205 and have the same ~2:1 ratio (except some early Bronco ratios that were ~2.3-2.5). If you're looking for an alternative to a 205, this isn't it unless you're looking to sacrifice strength for a little bit of weight and parts that are hard to come by.

Dana 20 stuff is tiny compared to a 205.

No go for sure on the 20.

I would do a doubler and an auto on an off road rig like yours.

TH 350 is a stout trans. Mine has held up well (after I quit doing neutral drops:D)

I have driven a buddys blazer with a 465/205 (similar to Horton all caged out and stuff) he has 5.13s with 40s I have 4.56 with 42s mine feels lower geared than his. Plus all the different options I have with the doubler.

I absolutely love my doubler.

I have a D20 here and for a jeep it's good, better with the upgrades but those upgrades are not cheap.
You could end up with a doubler by the time you buy the upgrades you mentionned.
If you want to switch to 465/205 it won't be $120 but we might be able to make you happy. :thumb:

Im sure you have a few of em lol.

I guess i need to drive a doubler, and a 465, then make my choice.

Oh a doubler would be way more gear so you will definitely love it, but for me I never felt the need for more than the 465/205
