I am trying to put on my new warn locking hubs and the hub is bottoming out on the spindle. Does that mean i have the rotor part on too tight or do i have some freak of nature spindles?

btw this is a 1978 3/4ton dana 44. just so you know what i am working with...

been over 10yrs since i've done this. I recall there being an iner and outer ring that needs to be removed. Do you have it correctly assempled?

Bottoming out taking the old one off or putting the new one on. As said theres an "external" style snapring on the shaft itself and an "internal" one on the wall of the hub housing.

there is a spindle nut, washer w/holes then another spindle nut, then the hub itself, then the lockring (the big one) then the snap ring (small one) that goes on the stub itself. i took one of the spindle nuts off to see if it was hitting the nut but its not. its hitting the spindle.

sorry for the bad typing. i am using one greasy hand. haha.

i just took off the super winch hubs and am replacing them with the warns. the warns are much deeper than the super winches.

what do you mean? like the locking hub gear? no its all the way in but needs to go in about another 1/16th of an in. do i just have the spindle nuts too tight or just out of the ordinary spindles?

Ok stupid question here but youve got the gear in the right way?

Also are you sure that the warn dials just arent shallower than what your used to with the MM's?

Try pulling it out and rotating and reinstalling. It may be keyed on one side perhaps?

yeah, its in the right way. an i cant get the lock ring in because the gap isnt big enough. the dial isnt on because if i did it would just pull the hub out. nothing is holding it in but the ring that i cant get in....

Hmmmm both sides are doing this? Check the hub gear for burs? Spindle nuts are definitely on tight enough and not backed out? Try tapping them lightly with a hammer. Perhaps if its related to a bur or a thousandth of an inch off spline or something a little shot with a hammer can correct it.

I've had to beat the crap out of an actually hub to get an old ass hub gear to rattle out so it wouldnt surprise me.

First, make sure you have the right lockouts (or hubs, as you're calling them). There are internal and external style D44 lockouts.

Which snap ring are you having trouble with? If its the one on the end of the stub shaft, put a screwdriver/pry-bar behind the yoke on the inner shaft and pry the axle shafts towards the outside of the axle.

If you're having trouble with the big snap ring that seats in the hub itself (the one that's ~4" around), make sure that the bigger gear is aligning with the splines in the hub and make sure that the smaller gear (the one on the stub shaft) is engaging the larger gear.

yeah its both sides. i am going to take the spindles to work tommorow an hit them with a grinder an see if i can take a little off . there are like 3 or 4 threads that stickout when both nuts are on so i got a little to play with.

thanks for trying to talk this out with me. What is your name? my name is kyle. i think its funny that i am getting help from someone so far away. hah

yes they are the internal lockouts. the part number is 20990.

and its the big 4 inch one. i can get the the whole assembly in but i need it to go in another 1/16th of an inch. its almost in.

You might've missed a snap ring.. the superwinch rings are harder to spot and harder to remove.

im pretty sure i got them all off. i had to replace the ujoints on the axle shafts so i had everything off.

My name is Chris

Don't grind the spindles, they aren't your problem.

Its been a long time since I dealt with Warn D44 hubs but are you sure the two gears are in the right orientation? Many times, they have to go on one way or the other.

Next, is the wheel off the ground? If so, spin it a little as you try to push the outer gear further into the hub.

i had tha same problem i couldent fit warns in my dana 44 either i had t0 use super wench i was told that some hubs are smaller than others u have to get diffrent hubs

Also it may be a good time to replacing your bearings and/or repacking them with grease. I had problems with my bearings spinning on the spindle. I had to get a new spindle. Also make sure you get the correct tork for the spindle nut. it requires a special socket

Done and done. Put new bearings on one side and repacked the other. I am going to find some longer hubs. I didnt grind the spindles.
