Just bought a Dana 44 axle with an ARB locker in it. I want keep the axle housing that I currently have under the my truck because its in better shape seals and such are all relatively new. Both axles have a 4.10 gear set. Can I just swap out the ring gear carrier assembly and carrier shims, leaving the pinion gears in place? Thanks!

as far as i know, each r&p are mated sets. as long as you keep them together it shouldnt be a problem.
just swap your ring gear onto the ARB and see how it looks.

hell, you might get close or even be super lucky as to have the gears within spec still after the swap.

No. you shouldn't.

can you? sure you can. should you? No you shouldn't.

With that said... what's the best way to approach this? Install the ring/arb assembly and pinion from the new axle into the axle I'm keeping? Or should I install just the ARB on the R&P that's into the axle I'm keeping? Or does it really matter at this point?

if you ask me its a big waste of time to swap the arp and gears on the axle housing unless its leaking at the tube seals. lots of setup work and stuff.

i would use the housing and gears and arb and swap your outers on and run it. faster in the end.

go to arb's web site and down load the install directions to give you a idea on the install. 30 some pages long.

Moving the ARB from the axle it's in now to the one that's in the truck will require you to reset the backlash and drill/tap a hole for the air fitting.

I'll agree with what's been said, probably easier to just swap in the axle with the ARB and replace seals and such if they're necessary.
