I recently detonated the entire outter half of my axle. I was at the auto skills shop here on ft benning and the guy there couldnt distinguish between anything to tell me what I need. I was hoping I could post a few pictures of what i have tomorrow but may be able to articulate it through writing. HERE WE GO!

I took hub and the brakes and what im assuming is the spindle. attached to said spindle was a bearing that was demolished after using a press and all sorts of ingenuity I was successful in removing that. Now attached to the truck is nothing there is just a small shaft sticking out. My big question is what do i need to replace from that small shaft out. I will post up pictures tomorrow as soon as possible but I have a weird feeling that I ordered all the wrong parts. I picked up 2 bearings the "inner" and "outer" wheel bearings timken set 37 and 45 respectively secondly I'm not even sure im working with a dana 44. i know be gentle

any help at this time would be greatly appreciated.

Its a 10 bolt, much more common than a D 44 and nearly identical in strength.

There are 2 44s if its an early one it used smaller bearings the 10 bolt and later 44s use the larger bearings they are interchangeable. In fact most parts knuckle out are interchangeable from a 44 to a 10 bolt

77+ i think they started using 10bolt fronts. Someone im sure will chime in and give the exact date.

its an 8 lug so im assuming its from a 3/4 ton. would it make any difference on the outside like that?

All the 8 lug 44 and 8 lug 10 bolts used the same bearings. I have used spindles from either or.

biggest difference in 3/4 to 1/2 ton is brake mounting system.

I had a 10 bolt that had the outers on one side from a 44 ( 8 lug) and the other side was a 10 bolt ( 8 lug) spindles out

so if i got 44 bearings i should be good? also where would i go to get the items to rebuild my hub? im not sure how nasty it is in there i didnt tear that down. apparently i shouldnt have be able to remove the hub in one piece like i did. i took the hub off and the spindle and bearing (pieces) were right there. does that mean i need to replace the spindle as well?

We need pics. If the surface of the spindle is not scarred then it should be fine. Are you talking about the lockout of the actual hub ( the actual hub contains the inner and outer wheel bearings), there is a seal that you need to replace to get a new inner wheel bearing in there. If you got the hub off and still had a bearing on your spindle then you need to look closely at all the surfaces cause you had a major failure.

So lets break it down you have the lockout ( locking hub) that comes out first. Then comes the first spindle nut, then the spindle lock ring, then the second spindle nut, brakes have to come off in order to get the hub off ( hub is the large peice that contains the wheel bearings and that the rotor is attached too), once that is off you should have a bare spindle and a shaft sticking out of it. Couple of nuts later and the spindle should slide ( with the persuasion of a rubber mallet). Then you are left with your stub shaft sticking out. At this point you can pull the entire axleshaft out ( outer shaft, u joint and inner shaft).

ball is in your court nerebel

Eric did a damn fine job of describing the parts. We need more pictures, and for some reason I can't even see the first ones :(

so the guys at the auto skills shop turned my stuff into the scrap guy so now i need everything thats missing from these pictures.

they should be buying those parts for you

You need a
spindle w/nuts
Rotor
Caliper? i dont see it there
bearings
hub
lockout
spindle nut
etc.

i would be going to a junkyard and pulling this stuff, replacing the bearings and going that route. that is a lot of stuff to buy

they arent going to pay for ****. What year make and model vehicles to i need to source these parts from? The caliper is up there hanging out resting on the steering bracket.

Look for a late-70's through '87 K20 (3/4 ton = 8 lug) pickup, or up through a '91 3/4 ton Suburban. These should have 8-lug 10-bolt front axles but double-check. You can verify but matching the diff covers as the 10-bolt has, well, 10-bolts and is round-ish in shape with two "ears" hanging off each side at the bottom of the housing. There are some good pictures on here for reference.

Some parts from some D44's will work but you have to be careful to match them up.....based on what appears to be your experience with this axle I would just concentrate on finding the 8-lug 10-bolt front axle and either take all the parts off of it. Strip it down to the same point as your axle and put all of those parts in a box and go, or maybe even find a complete axle (around here they go for $100-$150 for a complete axle).

thank you for that not a single k20 p/u around but they do have the big body suburbans. i will go pull those parts tomorrow and will get back with you guys if any other problems arise.

No luck whatsoever. The 3/4 ton suburbans around here are all 2wd. Nt a single k series. Anybody know where I can go online? There's a few guys selling whole axles but they are 6 lug. I don't want to buy a whole axle ten have to convert it over to 8 lug. Anybody have some leads on an 8 lug 10 bolt front? Need to get this fixed fast.

Have you looked over Ebay or Clist? I bought spindles from Ebay at one point. You can get all the bearings and nuts/washers/lock nuts from the auto parts stores. More than that, you can get the discs and bearing hubs from them too.

Sounds like that shopped f***ed you good, the discs you could have at least turned down. I can look at the local junkyards this weekend, it's 50% off, but I don't want to waste my time pulling them if you aren't going to take them.

The best place to source good used parts for the spindle, hub, rotor, backing plate, nuts, bolts, lockout hub, etc, is a good salvage yard.

Then I'd hit the nearest Autozone, O'Reilly's, Carquest, or NAPA auto parts store and get the bearings and seals.

What would be the cost on pulling them? Ive checked craigslist and eBay. Seem like a dead end everywhere I look. But i havent looked up complete axles on eBay I'll do that now. This seems like its alot harder than it should be.

try different names and make sure to add the core. Then take off 50%. Then add shipping. The entire axle is $100 after 50% off, then I can pull whatever you want off it to ship. See what it costs for new rotors before you pay for old ones shipped. The spindles and caliper bracket might be junkyard only. Also, make there is a complete list of what's needed.
