Dana 44 Hub has no splines, what?

Yep, your 1/2 ton used internal style locking hubs and the 3/4 ton uses external. Gotta buy locking hubs.
 
Did all 3/4 ton use external? I swear I have seen internal. If so couldn't I buy some internal ones from a junkyard and put them on and not have to buy new locking hubs?
 
You'll either need to find the stock Dana 44 external lockouts (same on chevy or ford, just different colored dial) or buy a set of Warn #9072 externals. The axle on my 73 F250 Highboy was Dana-44HD, closed knuckle with drum brakes and external locking hubs. But I had another axle from a 74 which was a regular Dana-44 with tiny closed knuckles and much smaller internal locking hubs. I love the look of the original external locking hubs.

If you want to swap to internal I believe you need to look for a 77-87 3/4 ton. The 73-76 used the external. BUT my friend and myself have '77 axles and the both have external hubs so it might be either depending on the month it was actually made? :confused:

Mo Money! I know Warn $185 are good but it looks like I can get Rugged Ridge $167 or Mile Marker $119 a little cheaper.

Rather than go to the junkyard and try and find some 77 on up hubs that will take my current internal locking hubs I will buy the Mile Marker 423 ones from 4wheelparts. $84 delivered to my door probably by Wednesday.
Axle swap/disc upgrade/shakle flip/cleaning and painting project almost done. Then I can wheel again and break something else:haha:
