Looking at a truck that has been converted to 3/4 ton running gear. The front dana 44 does not have lock-out hubs. It has um...well you know spindles? is the right? Dust caps and bolts around. This is a full time set up right? Is it easy to put lock outs on this?

Sounds like full time stuff (which is easy to convert) but a pic would help a bunch. :wink1:

This is my running sm465 3/4 ton short bed truck I picked up for $250.....what do you think?

and maybe for external hubs...looks like it sticks out pretty far, most "dust caps" i've seen stick out fractions over the shaft...that 1 looks like it sticks out inches, do you have a better pic of the hub..

Yep it is an external drive flange. It bolts to the hub rather than slipping inside it.

Here is a pic, this is a 60 but the same deal.

So are drive flanges stronger then lock-outs? Down side would be gas mileage I assume. This truck will be a work horse/trail truck so strength is more important than economy.

The plan is to strip the bed off and build a custom square tupe step-side. Lots of places to mount hi-lift, gas cans and the like. Lift will be small with a moderate sized aggresive tread (34" LTB's ?) So some fender trimming maybe required.

I know the iginition needs replaced so I'm thinking rocker switch for power on and a nice little delayed starter button to fire it up....Got my 8274 sitting on my work bench at home, so I'll have to build a bumper for that.

It has a posi in the rearend. Can I put a Detroit locker in that or do I have to get a new carrier first?

I'll try to post pics as I go along

Yep, drive flanges are stronger then hubs. Plus the locking hubs for external hubs are harder to find and more expensive. Warn makes a good set of external locking hubs if you want hubs. I would run Warn's on a trail truck or keep your slugs.

Downfall will be gas mileage like you said, and you will need to have a balanced from driveshaft if you plan to use the truck at speed cause it is always going to spin.

if it has "posi" in the rear, probably a gov loc, you'll need a new carrier. best bet would be to open it up and let us tell you what you have.

So your telling me no square front drive shaft...damn.
So the t-case in this is a part time original 84 1/2 case. So what happens when its shifted in 2H....because the hubs are always connected the front diff is always spinning in turn spinning the driveshaft, but the drive shaft is free spinning in the t-case untill it is put into 4h or 4l right?

Yeah i'm pretty sure the 14bolt has the gov bomb in it. I'll run it till I can afford to put a locker in there.
