If by newer generation you mean the 2nd design D44 in GM trucks from the late 70's I believe the inners are 30 spline, 297X (or whatever they are calling it now) u-joints, 19 spline stub shafts.
The second generation, I think was after 72 but will get the exact year tonight, after that it was 30 spline axles with 5-297x Axle U joints now replaced with 5-760x.
