Today I started replacing my front brakes and everything else on my D44.
It looks like my D44 vent location is covered or something. I've seen some info online about a vent hole in the axel tubes (pic below) how well would this work since it is after the inner axel seal? Would this burp pressure past the seal without destroying the seal? I have a hole on top which isn't drilled completely through. If I were to drill and tap the hole it looks like it will come through right on the inner seal race surface. Am I missing something?

In the tube it would do absolutely nothing, as the joint end is open. Factory, the breather was on the pumpkin, goes up to the crossmember, across to the drivers side and then up the core support

OK thats what I was thinking. I'll find another spot to drill and tap. Thanks!

I'm curious as to why so many online have drilled the axel tubes for a vent?

I can't seem to find where my original one would be. I thought this would be the location but thats metal at the bottom of the hole.

Maybe my axel tubes were replaced and never got drilled out? Does your vent hole come through just inside of the seal? Mine looks like it will pass through right on the seal if I drill it out. It's gotta be pretty close.

I don’t recall where the hole lands on the inside, but I remember this being a concern. But I wouldn’t have run it like this if it didn’t clear. I set this axle up over a year ago, but the truck is still a work in progress. Here’s a pic of the vent fitting I threaded in, still needs a barb fitting and hose obviously. 7C9A66A9-C85C-4299-8E56-36D025003B74.jpeg

This is weird... I drilled it out and it ended up right where my seal was (blue mark). Is it possible that there is a smaller diameter seal that sits on the red marked area? Has anyone had this problem?

I don't know Im thinking that's some kind of tab to remove the race ?
It would be nice if it was a channel leading to the vent hole although I doubt I'll be that lucky.

Did you ever figure this out? I have a Dana 44 front axle out of a 76 1/2 K20 with the same issue. What appears to be the vent location in the pumpkin leads straight to the seal location.

yes mine does to. if you run some break clean from the top you will see where it comes out carrier side of seal. Non issue in my opinion. Looked like op had a broken then plugged vent nipple.

Later on I was told my location was incorrect. Today I'll dig and look for a picture of the correct vent location.

I'm not really sure why mine was sealed up?
