I'm running Yukon 35 spline stubs in my Dana 60,with a full spool. This is in a Fullsize Jimmy,1 tons,4 speed, and a nice 454.Also am running 44 boggers.Granted,I have a lead foot, but I have shattered 3 of these axles.Always pasenger side stub axle. This has also cost me 2 Warn premium lockers.Needless to say, very expensive.I know there are alot of evils here, massive tire, massive motor, and massive weight. But I honestly thought this setup would have been stronger.Give me your thoughts.

I agree that the spool is the issue... as to the warn hubs, they should be warrantied... I broke a couple and wound up trading out for some warn drive flanges... I only broke one inner and it was bound up bad when it happened and I was at full throttle when it caught.
gabe

not gonna be cheap but id ether

1.buy some ctms or lonfields and drive flanges (neither are gonna be warrientied cause of the spool)

or buy a locker

i personally dont like yukon shafts cause i have heard alot of bad things about clearancing the knuckle to get the u joint through...alloy usa is now owned buy another company but idk what the diffrence in strength between the alloys and yukons are

This right here is your problem.

My front is spooled as well. Running drive flanges. No breaks so far. Admittedly I don't get out to wheel much. Ease up on the skinny pedal when you are turned hard over.

As mentioned, both the Yukon shafts and Warn hubs should be lifetime warranty so I don't follow as to how these are expensive failures.

As for breaking shafts, you may be reaching the limits of a D60. How heavy is the truck?

Clearance the shaft yoke, not the knuckle. One of mine fit right in, the other took a little grinding

44s on a dana 60, stick shift, big block.....and a lead foot. your gnna break shafts from time to time. just get used to it or ease up on the gas. everything is breakable no matter wht you build. there is no such thing as a "bashproof" axle. i break outers on my rockwells every now n then and i have a lil ol stock tbi 350 but also with a stick. an auto tranny will help reduce parts breakage but i like my stick.

know when to ease up and carry spares.

I completely disagree with the idea that the front spool is causing issues. I just don't understand how it could cause issues...you break shafts when under power, if you are under power a Detroit, Lock-right, etc...will be locked solid just like a spool. If anything a spool puts less shock-load on the shafts versus a locker that engages on and off and has a little play in the teeth.

Both myself and 78Buford have been running the 35-spline Yukon stubs for quite a while with no issues yet. He has 42's, a moderate big-block (500 ft-lbs.), 6,000+ lbs. and gets beat hard (I watched him hit a 5' tall rock ledge at 5,000 rpm, tires at 5 psi, and all 4 tires bounced off the ground). Mine has 39.5's but the 6.2 and in the 6k lbs. range......however both are automatics.

The last thing, are the spindle bearings (small roll bearings that the stubs ride on) in good shape?

i also question the logic behind idea of the spool bein the culprit. i agree with 6.2, he hit it on the head.

another vote for the spool not being the problem,

I am not a fan of yukon and twice I have seen them snapped like twigs the last 2 times my friend has taken out his truck. 1 time while crawling 2 feet onto a car, the second in a mud hole. They broke both times stupid easy and only with 37's

maybe a quality control issue and not all batches are of the same quality? I dunno, but you only get to wheel a handful of times a year in a rig you dropped hours and hours on, 5 knuckles, 1 leg gash and tons of money. I think its a worth while investment to have shafts you dont have to worry about.

longs are what I will pony up for

id just let up on the gas a little, but im cheap.

I add another that the spool is not the problem. A locker would act the same way.

Welcome to the world of big blocks and 44" Boggers. Swap to TSLs in the front and it will help some. But, the skinny pedal is the culprit for sure (as you know).

www.longfield.com $2000... solve your problems.
