Dana 60 35 spline stub shafts, locking hubs, and inner axles

Doh!!! I mailed a payment to you for a set of Superiors at the lower costs! J/K /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

That's why I had to ask you again. I heard they were high and thought you might have gotten them at a "normal" price.

I don't understand why they are any higher than the Yukon's. They aren't made of any exotic metals are they?

Oh, my mailing address is in the letter... /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

It's going to take a while to sort through the pros and cons of each type but I'd say the superiors will be higher quality than the yukons, along with higher priced. I don't know how the moser shafts stack up, they've been out quite a while and haven't made a real big splash. Don't know if it's due to marketing though.
Someone needs to build a really big axle breaking machine. Hmmmmm...

I really don't think the Mosers are where its at. From what I have seen, they seem to not hold up any better than a stock shaft. Don't know exactly why, but they just don't hold up like they should. They do however have an excellent warranty though. I know of someone that broke 6 complete sets before they quit giving him more. Although he has broke a fullset of CTM's "Unbreakable Axles". He did have a 468 BB, Klune, 5.0 Atlas, and 46" Claws. He has since steped down to a vortech V6, but still broke a CTM stub the other day. Go figure. Chris Durham has been running the Superiors for a full season on the 40" MT/R's and hasn't broke them yet. Don't know too many more people running them that get it though. Who know's? I think I'm just going to put some 35" gumbo mudders on 16.5 chromies and call it done. Screw it. I'll wheel everything at 30 psi.

Stephen,
Have you seen a Spicer inner shaft break?

Anyone seen one let go??
Clean break or do they shatter??

I've seen two 30sp D60 stubs snap. The Ford stub was a clean break...like a D44 break.

My 30sp GM stub, on the other hand, shattered and twisted off at the end of the splines- with a "galded" look on the inside of the break. The stub also had a split down the length of the entire shaft- almost to the grease seal area. This explosive event also caused a slight deformation in the splindle, which I replaced.

I hope when (not if) the Spicer inner goes, it will be a clean break. I still carry my old tool for retrieving D44 axle parts- a 3 foot piece of hex rod with a tube welded at the end filled with several round permanent magnets and held toghether with epoxy. Works like a champ.

I've seen one Spicer inner break. It was the long side and it was a pretty long break. Both sides that were left were kind of pointed, and there was a lot of debris in the tube. The break started about 6" up from the splines and the broken section was about 5-6" long with several shards missing.

It happened at pretty high RPMs on a heavy truck in the mud. Not sure if that had anything to do with the type of break or not. Boggers tend to be hard on shafts when they grab a tree root at 5K RPMs.

Oh, and the outers were 35 spline new Spicer units with Warn Premium Hubs and SPL series U-Joints. The inners were pretty old and probably fatigued. That's the only time I've seen just an inner break.

I've seen one and I think it was the older style that necked down and seems like it broke near the yoke. I don't think they're going to snap like a D44, they don't have the necked down area to force the broken location to one area.
No matter how you slice it, the 35 spline minor diameters are the same for the inner and outer so they're going to be similar strength.
