So I’m currently working on some stuff on my crawler Suburban and will be diving into the front axle sometime soon. I need to replace the wheel bearings and since the axles have been setting outside for a while I also plan on replacing the brakes. I’m waiting on some parts for the rear axle still but have swapped to discs in the rear already with new calipers and rotors. I plan on replacing the front calipers and rotors as well and since I plan on that I’m tying to see which way to go. I currently have some 44 inch boggers on some 15 inch wheels but the backspacing is next to nothing so they stick way out. I don’t have the factory Dana 60 caliper installed right now as I pulled the axles out of another frame and the caliper is still on that frame. But looking at the wheel and how far away from the brackets it is, I seriously doubt that it will rub the factory caliper. But I doubt I will run this wheel set up for ever, however, I plan on going to a 16.5 or 17 inch at minimum. So I still should be fine with the factory caliper. However, being that I’m looking at replacing it anyways I’m wondering if I should get something “better” or “upgrade” it anyways.

What’s everybody running?

Crappy picture but the wheel is bolted on and you can see most of the caliper bracket where the caliper bolts up.

i have had no real problem with dana 60 factory brakes over almost 20 years . i have run from stock to 38" swampers . good pads / rotors / calipers condition and braided stainless steel hoses on the k30 master and hydro boost .

as to replacing wheel bearings better check them first . they might just need a clean and repack . i just did mine from my last time doing it over 15 years ago . grease was done but bearings were fine once i run them threw the parts washer .

I have been contemplating just going this route for ease of trying to get it all back together in a timely manner and that I can get all the parts locally. I still need to order some brake lines since I lifted it and swapped to discs in the rear so those are on the list. The burb was set up with vacuum booster so I would also like to swap to the hydro boost also since I am redoing the brakes and looking into hydro-assist steering or full hydro. Trying to do it all at the same time. Ive been saving money for the steering, I just need to pull the trigger on it.

I did tear apart the driver side yesterday and the outer bearing didn't look horrible. It could probably be cleaned and reused. I bought the axles used several years ago and don't know the history of them really. They were under a K5 that was a play toy though and after I bought them they set outside for a while so I kind of just want to redo everything except for the gears and the differential carrier bearings. Fingers crossed they survive a little while anyways until I can redo them.

my axle i just did is now under its 4th truck since 2001 or 2002 when i pulled it from the crew cab .

its been a daily driver / plow truck / mud toy / snow play and recovery truck / all around work horse . . .

i just hate seeing people toss good bearings before they even check them first . todays unit bearings have made people numb to the facts of our out school bearings .

This was the driver side outer. It’s dirty as all get out but it didn’t look bad. Didn’t want to hardly turn though and when you spin the wheel the bearings sound pretty rough. Might try cleaning them first and see what happens.

Dont forget OFFROAD DESIGN has offset leaf spring bushings to bolt dodge axle in our trucks .

Yep those bearings need clean and checked .

Basicly same caliped gm to dodge on our style 60 fronts . Just hose mount location and shape. Dodge used 1/2inch wheel studs . Gm used 9/16 stud . And i think the rotor is a bit thicker if i recall.

Check out billa vista dana 60 bible. It lists all the subtle differences in these axles of this era.
