I have always been under the assumption that if your gears are 4.10s you can swap to 3.73s easy, and vice versa. But a jump to 4.56 means a carrier change too.

Is this supposed to be pretty much true? Or is there 4.10 or 3.73 gear sets that'll work on the 4.56 carrier, etc.?

I'll kind of stumped by my recent findings.
The one on the left had 4.10 gears on it. The one on the right has 3.73s.
But there's almost a 1/4" difference in mounting flange location..... :dunno:
Hard to see in the pic.
I'm certain that it's just a different carrier size. But I just didn't think that was possible with those 2 gear sizes.

There’s also the thick/thin gear I think.

You are correct about the 4.10 / 4.56 split, that's the only carrier break.

The Dana 60bible on pirate says that that's the only break too. But I have some sort of difference going on:dunno:. I measured it to almost right at 1/4". And it's the wrong way. There's no way my 3.73 gear can go on that carrier and work in my axle... It'd be crushed into the pinion gear too hard to spin even.

The thick/thin gears are on the reverse cut high pinion Ford stuff.

Here's a pic where you can see the casting is different.

Maybe the people my Crewcab came from before Eric tried changing the carrier and messed it up. It had a twisted off pinion. Which I thought was odd. And it had timken bearings so it had been out at least once. I dunno

You never know.....but there is only that carrier split unless you start talking Dana 61s but that's a dodge thing

Looks like I'm hosed either way. I'm not putting the welded one back in. So I'm now on the hunt for a carrier.

Theres a truck junk yard near here. I think Monday or tuesday I'm going to go see what they have. I looked once and they have a shelf full of already pulled ones. The guy said he thought they only went for $50-60. There was also a detroit
Locker there that day with "4.10 down" written on it. Maybe that's still there . lol

Someone mentioned the thick gear sets. Supposed to be able to use thick gears on the other carrier.

If I buy a carrier I always get a higher geared (IE 4.10 and down) and use thick gears on them. My thinking is the gears are only 20 bucks or so more, and what is twenty bucks when you are spending six or seven hundred for carrier and gears anyways. Then I have the option of using any ratio I want on that carrier.

Well after looking at the old gears I found they ARE 4.56 :doah: I never even checked them.

The rpo codes for the truck say 4.10. and it looks like a stock truck. But I forgot you can't assume chit on a squarebody lol.

My bad, I'm stupid. Lol .

Yeah I'm going to have to check. I planned on it anyway because it needs opened for maintenance. But right now the crewcab is put together in hollow front axle 2wd mode just to get it licensed.

I know the yard near here has a bunch of the carrier I need available. Just wasn't thinking I needed to spend that money at the moment. Guess I do lol.
Not a big deal, just kind of dashed my hairbrained plan to save $$.
