the time has come, i just pulled the 4.56 carrier and pinion out of my 60 housing and am almost ready to swap in my new (well, used) 4.10 carrier and gears (thanks to obijuan) but i think i am over my head on this one.

the bearings and races on my old carrier and pinion look like new so i will be reusing them. I know i will need some gear marking compound, the tool that i cant remember the name of now that measures backlash (got it), an inch pound bar style torque wrench, and some pinion nuts because inevitable i will F@ck this up a couple times.

is there anything big i am missing/hints or advice?

is there anyone near San Luis Obispo CA that might be willing to help? Refreshments provided of course:wink1:

A good supply of shims and you'll be good to go. You can always post up pictures here, I'm on this site pretty often and I've setup a few dozen diffs :thumb:

You'll need some way to get the bearings off of the carrier if you need to change the shims. Hopefully your 4.10 carrier already has the bearings and shims on it, if it does you may get lucky and not have to change the shims.

If it doesn't have bearings on it then you'll have to try and get the bearings off of the 4.56 carrier without destroying them. Use the old bearings as trial bearings by grinding the inside opening until they slide on the carrier easily. Then you can change shims around easily to get the backlash and preload right. Once that is done then you can press on the new carrier bearings and do final assembly.

Dont know if this will help, but, this past weekend on Extreme 4X4 half of the show was an in depth episode on setting up gears in a dana 44, which I believe should be the same as a 60. You can probaly view most of the show online at the powerblock tv website.:D

You know Cuervo, your avatars always make it difficult to browse ck5 at work. Everyone keeps stopping at the desk while they walk by.:doah:

I do like the fact that he keeps changing them up :D

ok so if i want to reuse my old bearings, i either have to press them off and on again and again until i get the shims right? bad news, i will probly ruin them in the process... anybody have a set of old carrier bearings they would send to me?

finally had enough time to watch the extreme 4x4 vid, i hadnt watched that in a while-- deffinately better quality show than the rest of the powerblock advertisements **cough** i mean shows.

i think that is the first time on nearly any automotive show they actually show Ian tearing it down and doing each bit step by step... usually the host says some stuff, you see an anonymous pair of hands doing some random part of the process, then the host is back showing you the finished product.

Very informative thanks for the link
