So we are currently breaking down our dana 60 to freshen it up and trying to determine the right gears.

My question, how can I tell it we need to replace the king pins? Can we simply just take em a part clean and put back together?

Thanks for the help. I have the pirate page on replacing the king pins to help with the procedure, but does not say what makes it necessary to replace...

How do the plastic caps look? Grooved, look worn down? Do you have both sides apart? You can put the king pin springs from both side next to one another and see if they are different. Was there any death wobble before taking it apart? Most of the time you can just clean and re assemble.

OK.. .that does help. I have never ran the axle. So far everything has been clean and well maintained. I have yet to take the King pins apart. When I do i will check for scars etc... Just wanted to know before I started taking it apart.

I was wondering if the would get loose like a ball joint? It when wore they allowed any sort of noticeable wiggle?

It shouldnt if it was stock. When i got mine it was from an all stock truck. I took it apart also. On mine, The grease was super old. Thats all i changed and new brake pads. Post some pics. There is plenty of help here. Good luck.

The hardest part for me was the brakes. Couldnt figure out how to get the caliper off.

The trunnion bearing on the bottom will get lateral slop in it that you can feel by hand. The kingpin itself on top of the inner-C will be visibly damaged on the surface when it needs to be replaced. The nylon bushing will usually crack or wear out when they get really beat up. The kingpin spring that pushes the nylon bushing in to the kingpin cone can wear out too. You can usually see if the camber is off when the weight of the rig is on it. You can also tell by the resistance to turn the knuckle from the tie rod hole. If you feel like being really technical, a fish/luggage scale reading of about ~25 lbs measured from that hole is the correct "preload" for that kingpin bushing. If it is significantly less than that, the spring is probably worn out (you can shim with a fender washer). Keep in mind that that rotating resistance is extremely subjective, as the grease and even temperature of the grease could change that. Basically though, if that knuckle can flop around with almost no resistance, you know something is up.

Isnt it just 2 bolts or were the bolts rusted/seized to hell?
