I am trying to disassemble my Dana 60, do install a new stub shaft. Does the Dana 60 use a bigger hub nut socket than a Dana 44? I am assuming it does, because I can't get any of my hub nut sockets to work on the damn thing. Thanks.

Martin

A 14 bolt hub socket uses 6 tangs. I have that socket. The Dana 60 hub nut on my 1982 K30 has 4 cut outs.

Newer model 14 bolts should have 4 tank hub nuts. The 14 botl with 6 is the style with 1 nut, a woodruff key and a retainer. The newer 14 bolts should have 1 nut, and lock rings and a lock nut, and those should be a 4 tang. When I did mine I took off the 60 hub nut the old fashioned way, hammer and punch and replaced with the 6 tang 14 bolt hub nut so I could carry a single socket that fit both axles. You could of course do the reverse and switch the 14 bolt to the 4 tang as well.

My 14 and 60 both use 6 fingers. And I believe it's a 2 5/8th" for them both. If you have one with 6 or one with 4 and need the vice versa, you can grind either to 2 fingers and it WILL work on 4 and 6 finger nuts.

OK, great info here.

Now, for the hard part. Who has a good part # for the 4 prong later model Dana 60 socket from, say, Craftsman or NAPA?
Where us "not affiliated with Mac or Snap-on anymore" type folks are.
Hell, at this point, I'd settle for a 'Vatozone socket.

I got all my sockets from Kragen, Now O'reily, they all are good quality pieces, I have all of them:D

Got mine at Napa, they got the good stuff. It was a tool sale, got it cheap.

I used to say I had almost every tool known to man. Then I realized I didn't have a later model Dana 60 hub socket when I went to assemble my 60:doah:

I picked one up from O'Reilly's. It was $21ish. It is a Performance Tool brand socket. 1/2 drive, part number W83010.

My Snap On and Cornwell guys didn't answer today. I'll probably have the Cornwell guy get me a better quality one coming.

That would probably work, but I would just as soon as have both correct sockets. I spend a lot of money on tools.

They also make a 2 finger one if you didn't wanna grind a few off. You would really have to over torque to break them off.

I bought the 4 prong one already, and I've had the 6 prong one for years.

Powerbuilt:
4 prong W83010
6 prong W1270

GreatNeck:
D44 33625965 or just 25965 (this is the nicer one, the one with the prongs on the inside of the socket, instead of on the end)

I have all three. Changed my 14b over to a D60 4 prong. I keep the 6 prong if other people on the trail need it.

Yeah I like that one too, it fits around the nut and the prongs are on the inside so it doesn't slip of to the side. But I also have the other one.
One stays in my tool bag in the truck.

Stay away from the Performance Tools one I bought if you are looking for quality.
