Which one will serve me best? I'm willing to buy it, just want the right tool!

The 7/8" x 3" piece of hex stock, use with a 7/8 socket and an impact.


OR


the 7/8" Allen wrench, about 12 inches long, for use with a cheater pipe.

Those of you who've done it, hook a Brother up!:D
 
I used the 12" Allen wrench with a cheater pipe. Got the wrench from a local Grainger. Worked well, but they were on pretty tight. Took me hanging off a pipe ~4 feet long IIRC.
 
My IR impact wouldn't budge it at all. I got some 7/8"hex stock and cut a small length of it and used a matching 3/4" socket and a breaker bar. Once the breaker bar started bending, a grinder with a cutoff wheel worked well to slice the pin just above the knuckle surface and relieve the tension. Then the breaker bar worked.

I'd choose the Allen wrench.
 
Allen wrench for sure. When I did mine years ago...I broke 1/2" snap-on ratchets, breakers bars, 7/8" long style lug nuts and everything else I could come up with. I even welded the breaker bar back together with little pieces of steel for re-enforcement. Broke all that stuff too. I was working for High Angle Driveline at the time...I even broke some of Jesse's tools. :crazy: My bling IR impact wrench told me to get fuuucked. :eek1:

Bought this thing at Tractor Supply I think, or another similar farm supply store.

Less than $20. Had the king pins out in 5 minutes using that thing and a cheater pipe. :D
 
Took everyones advice; Ordered the 7/8" allen wrench, and two kingpin rebuild kits.

I bought an allen wrench and a 7/8" socket that is 3/4" drive and cut a length of the allen wrench so that once it was in the socket there was only enough left so that when the other end was in the king pin the socket was about touching the king pin then I used a 3/4" drive breaker bar and a cheater pipe to break them free. For the return trip of the new king pins I used my 3/4" drive 200-600 ft/lb torque wrench to properly torque them to the required 600 ft/lbs.
 
if you cant seem to get it off, take a grinder with a cut off wheel and cut as close as you can on the old kindpin without going into the knuckle. not only will this relieve the 600 ft/lb of torque on it but it will also heat it up pretty good. worked like a charm for me.
 
I was board at work and I machined a 7/8" allen wrench out of 4340 Chrome Moly:D. It has been heat treated but I haven't had the front end apart to actually use it yet.

7/8" hexagonal steel stock. Technically not an allen wrench. Broke it.
 
You need the stock (or cut off a big chisel).

However, you just effectively bought both. Because if you can't get it off with the allen wrench you can cut a small chunk of it off and you have the stock.

Then slide on 1" drive 7/8" impact socket, insert 1" drive 1500 ft-lb impact gun and press trigger. Done faster than you can let go of the trigger.
 
I use a 2' piece of 7/8" hex stock w/6" bent over @ approx 75deg. and a propane torch on the king pin for at least 60sec. Has worked for me on 3 different rigs now.
