I'm looking at the rebuild kit, can you explain what's happening with the top nuts/bolts, etc? The one I'm tearing apart has studs, but the picture on the ORD site appears to shown nuts/bolts. I don't think I understand how that can work.

Also, I'd be interested in getting the top cover and bottom plate if possible. Do you guys have those, and how much do you charge? I had to beat the snot out of my bottom plate to get it off. It's functional, but since I'm going to the trouble...

Speaking of trouble, would you recommend removing the upper kingpin just to replace a torn grease seal? My kingpin looks okay, but the seal is torn.

if your studs and nuts are good reuse them . if not ord can sell you new .

top cover as in tin one pass side ? if its not paper thin from rust its reuasable. or ord can sell you new also . bottom plate if will have to ask them . I never had to replace one . and I live in the rust belt. but when I get mine out I blast them bare . then copper anti seize on the body to knuckle so it wont seize in again as much .

the seal fits over the king pin . not under it.

and look in here for pics of good/bad king pins. http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=307918&highlight=king+pin

Seal goes over kingpin... nice. That problem is solved. I just got the driver side apart last night and it's not cleaned up yet.

I'm looking at the ORD kit:

and this one from 4wd factory:

The 4wdf one has the cover (my zerks are both snapped off) but no hardware. My studs are seized into the knuckle, so they'll probably be rough by the time they come out. The ORD one appears to have new hardware, but I don't understand how it does what the studs do...

I'll post a pic of the kingpin on my other thread. It doesn't look worn or anything, but I could be wrong.

ORD uses the covers to make their high steer arms, that's why they don't sell them in the kits. They may be able to provide one if you need one though, most people just reuse their covers.

The drivers side has the steering arm and should have studs, the passenger side doesn't have a steering arm and just uses the cap with bolts (unless you do crossover steering).

ORD should be able to get you a new bottom cover plate if you need it though.

you don't need to remove the studs for basic service .

zerk can be turned out . try a small torks bit or easy out to pop it out. little heat will help also . I have gotten a lot of them out this way .

Yeah, I have no doubt I can salvage the cover. If I can get one for $10 though, it's worth it to have everything nice and perfect when I slide this axle under my truck for the first time.. :pimp: And one less thing to wire wheel and paint.

As far as the studs go, it's also a matter of how clean I get everything. Right now 3 of the 4 are seized into the knuckle. The other one appears to have the nut nearly seized onto the stud. I'll heat them up and see if they pop out.

What's the story on the metal gaskets in the 4wdf kit? My axle didn't have these at all, at least not on the driver side. Is there supposed to be one top and bottom? I'm assuming they are gaskets and not shims.

you only use gaskets on the caps, the steering arms needs metal to metal contact to work properly.

You mean you only use it on the one side, one per axle? That would make sense, I've only taken apart the steering side.
