I am replacing the kingpin parts on my dana 60. Does anyone know how to press the new bearing races into the axle while its bolted to the truck. the hammer trick on a frozen race does not work well because of lack of swinging room between the axle and ground. I have race drivers but I cant get a good angle to hit it with. thank you!

I did mine with the Harbor Freight C clamp kit thingie and some playing with socket sizes

Just rebuilt mine before swapping in the 60. Of course I had the axle out and upside down. Very easy this way.

I can imagine it would be hard getting the races in upright. Have you tried freezing the races and heating the housing? This may make it a little easier.

I'm doing mine today.

Mine is on jack stands under the Burb. If I have to, I will jack it up a bit. Hope it goes in smooth.

Just use the ball joint tool from HF. Put a tiny layer of grease on the C to prevent gaulling and press the race in. Easy. No heat, no freezing, just do it :D IIRC the C has a slight chamfer to help with starting the race.

Freeze the race, use your floor Jack as the press, and tap the inner c with a hammer. The balljpint press is easiest though, if you can't flip the axle over.

Your old race will make a good race driver BTW.

Ok. Just got mine in. I used the old race, flipped it upside down and put scotch tape around it. Start hammering. Went in good. The tape comes off as you hammer it in. Re did the tape a couple times. Got it in and forgot to put in the cap and seal first!!! ****!!!!

Pulled it back out and now going back out to redo it.

Good times. I need a beer!

In and done.

Question.

Do i put in the lower seal now? Before installing the knuckle? I think so.

Ya, that seal is way easier to install now.

I also like to put gasket sealant or RTV on the OD of the seal and the cap above the race.

I think I used the races or a socket. I'm sure either will get it done, although I used the u joint press.

Borrowed a friend and removed the axle. Since it wasn't all connected, it went pretty easy. All done. Now I just need to get the rest done so I can get this thing back on the wheels. Thanks all for the help!
