My 85 dana 60 leaks out both spindle areas with gear lube, is there a seal at the end I can reach or are they like a 9" and the only seals are just outside the carrier inside the axle and require a complete tear down?

front dana 60 inner seals and requires pull out of guts to replace.

rear 60 would just lube bearings and if wheel seal bad get on brakes. = simple seal swap.

definitely the front dana 60, guess I should have been more clear, rear is 14bff out of 2006 3/4 ton silverado, so factory disc brakes. Well then, guess I'll have to wait it out until I do a regear in the front. What's the typical gear for a 35-37" tired truck. Right now 60mph is just under 3000 rpm with the 4.11 gears and th400.

When you get new seals also get the dana Spicer ones. Not carquest or Napa. The spicer ones have a bell on them to guide the axle shaft back in. Unless Napa has come out with new ones.

My new napa ones had the bell.

Yah I have bought a couple of the Napa ones they have had the bells.

Also the autozone ones I bought had bells too

what's the average cost on a regear/reseal of a dana 60??? going 4.10 to 4.56? 4.88 or so. What you guys think with 35-37" tires.

I charge 250 labor for a regear. Gears vary widely. My local trans shop has 60 gears for 160 ish IIRC. Just depends on what you can find em for.

Master install will be 120 should have new axle seals in it. Reseal is a pretty wide term, the more someone wants me to do to an axle the more I charge.

A complete rebuilt replace all replaceable parts with new parts is about 350 -400 labor. But that's just what I charge. May be totally different in your area

What trans do you have?

Style of driving?

Motor?

etc. need more info for gear recommendation

th400, mostly city driving, max on highway is usually 60, since no overdrive, it's at about 2700 or so rpm now with 4.10s. Motor is a 2004 5.3L out of an avalanche

Wont it leak if the case is over filled? I mean the seals are not super tight around the axle shaft so to much gear oil would seep through and leak a little.

Get the Spicer 52148 inner seals. It's the ones used in the late F-250's/early Superduty's, one of those. It's a two piece seal that rotates in itself so it's not actually riding on the axle shaft. They're about twice the price and you have to pay a little more attention when installing though.

how can you overfill the case when the diff cover has the fill port in the front? Once it starts pouring out of there I cap it off.

4.56s should be well suited. If you were running a stick Id suggest you stick with 4.10s. I really wouldnt go with 4.88s with a non-od trans until you start hitting that 4.88 range where the tires are not only getting taller but wider and heavier too.

Not hard to do if the caster on the axle is wrong. **** my 14bff in my rig took like 3 gallons of fluid from the pinion being aimed right at the t case.
