Dana 60 locking hub problem?

Hey guys, new Blazer owner here. The hubs on the Dana 60 are Spicer brand. They only turn about a quarter turn or less and don't engage. I tried to take it apart today to just clean it out and see if maybe something was going on in there. I get the outer cap and dial off, and the 2 locking rings off, then there's another circular ring (not sure of name) that can come off. After that I can see the axle and move it around but not sure how to remove the gears around it? I cleaned what I could up and re-greased it but it still does the same thing. I'm probably missing something here or need to take more stuff off. Let me know what you guys think?

Thanks!

when i swaped on the spicers to my axle i had to grind the ends of the stub shafts a tiny bit as thay were pushing on the dial making it vary hard to turn.

but a good clean and light grease/oil of the dial to body and good free movement of the slider gear is good. also lock the hubs in first and out last helps. as the tcase being locked in can bind up the system a tiny bit.

here is the parts blow up of a spicer. but as a non paying member you prob wont see it.

and welcome to the sight. :thumb:

and the spicer hubs are the best other than drive slugs. warn is nothing like it use to be. and can be modifyed to 35 spline when you upgrade the stub shafts. and still stronger than a warn hub.

Heres a diagram I found on google search. I just took mine off cause they wouldnt disengage and the entire hub was packed with a grease water slurry. Good Luck

Once the outer portion of the hub is off, is the axle shaft supposed to be able to pull in and out slightly and wiggle around a little?

Also looking at the exploded view

I dont think I saw the actuating cam body? Maybe I didnt look close enough but-- how do you get that out and after that comes out should the axle shaft sleeve ring and the clutch ring and spring come out easily?

So turns out it was missing all those parts of the hub. So I just bought some warn ones at the local shop. The problem I'm running to is the housing part around the hub on the driver side seems like there is a lip someone created from hitting it with a hammer or its slightly warped a little to where the outer portion of the hub won't fit in. I had trouble getting the parts from the old hub out and had to wiggle it a bunch to get it out. Can I just grind this lip a little with a dremmel or something so that the outer part of the hub will go in and sim flush? The passenger side went smoothly and sits flush .

A pic would be a huge help with your last question. I think you've got enough posts now to post pic links so host them on photobucket or the like and post them up.

Fyi, depending on what parts you have and ther condition the Spicers can be valuable so don't "give" them away.

or toss them away. :thumb:

Sure thing,

So here is what came out of the spicer... not much you see... anyone think that is worth anything?

And the problem I ran into is this rim where the arrow is pointing, was warped or someone hit it with a hammer and created a lip....

And then it caused this part of the hub, not to sit flush with the tube. So I used the equivilant of a dremel to get rid of that lip/inconsistency and had to bang it a little w/ a rubber mallet but it sits in flush now.

I took it for a spin and still unsure if the 4wd works, I know for a fact the front drive shaft turns, but the handling is similar when its locked and i put it in four... so maybe just get it stuck and see

Is there a Spicer hub on the other side? Any idea about the guts (or lack of) in it?

Both driver and passenger sides are the same... I guess someone took the components of the hub out, anyway there are some warns on there now... here's to hoping it works. I may jack it up and put it in drive to see if the tires spin on front and rear and not kill myself or the truck.

A complete set of hubs is worth $150+ so I'd say you have $75~$100 worth of parts if they clean up good. I would base the final price on the condition of the chrome bezels and yellow knobs, really nice bezels that are not scarred up are becoming rare. ;)
