Dana 60 or 70 rear?

I found a rear 1 ton axle out at my buddys house just sitting there, so i think i am going to pick it up, but when i saw it i couldnt tell if it was a dana 60 or 70, i know its one of them, and i am wondering what you guys think of putting it in a k5 or not. Its free but can always look else where for a 14ff.

I would find out for sure what it is before you install it.

assuming the axle has sat out for a long time, take a piece of sand paper and a can of WD40, and sand the rust and crap off the lower part of the diff webbing. you should be able to see 60 or 70 cast into the housing.

Another thing too think about is what gears it has in it.

Im not sure what truck its in, its just bolted to a frame that was cut in the middle, i was going to try to clean it to find out, but my friend lives far away, so the next i go out there i am going to find out for sure what it is. I forgot to ask, has any one ran a 60 or 70 in the rear of their K5, how big of tires can you run with them? Thanks for your help.

The easiest way to tell if its a Dana 70 worth getting is pulling one of the axle shafts.

Not all Dana axles have that number casted into the webbing. The best way to get any info about the axle is to get the BOM number off the tube. Take the sandpaper, or anything rough, and sand/clean the tubing to search for some stamped numbers/letters. Get those numbers and call a place like Randy's R&P to decode the BOM.

1.5 35splnes are not that $ to upgrade to
I had to go from 32spline to them and IIRC it was under $200 a shaft

I saw some #s and letters on top of the housing towards the front and those were the only #s i could find at the time, i didnt have a lot of time to check out the hole thing. You think those #s might be the ones or are there more then one set? Thanks again for the help.

Nope. Don't even try looking at the numbers on the housing. Look on the tubes for the numbers. The housing numbers don't do much for help anyways. Gotta look on the tubes for the numbers. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Most often the B.O.M. is found on the passenger side rear facing tube . They are small in print and stamped so it might be challenging to find and read .

I have a full float 60 that I was gonna convert to 35 spline but I picked up my 70 for $50.Shafts right now are close to $200 each.
