This might be a dumb question but I will ask anyway. I need to regear a chevy dana 60 from 4.10 to 4.56 and I now know that I need a new carrier (thanks to this forum). But I was going to go open carrier but now from looking at pics of different lockers does a locker replace a carrier? I see pics of open carriers with the spider gears and cross pin and then when I look at lockers it looks like all I would need if I went with a locker right off the bat would be the new 4.56 R&P and the locker and I could not worry about the carrier, or am I looking at the pics wrong?? Any help would be great, thanks!!

you are correct... most lockers for the 60 are full carrier replacements so if you went with one, lets say a detroit all you need to do is buy the r&p and your set. thats what i did and im glad that i forked up the extra money and dont have to go back in dig in that damn axle again

Detroits, ARB's and a few others replace the whole carrier.

Lockrights, quik-loks, etc only replace the spider gears.

thanks for the info but would u happen to know what other lockers do replace the carrier I kinda would rather do more of a limited slip than a full locker like a detroit to help with steering (and I cant afford an ARB)

The detroit is the cheapest locker that replaces the whole carrier.

Limited slips are a little cheaper, the truetrac is the best one but its only $60 less than the detroit (both can be found here). You also get a trac-lok (Dana limited slip, pretty worthless IMO) or a Precision Gear power-lok (power-loks are supposed to be pretty good limited slips but its probably not that cheap either).

A new open carrier will be around $100, I sold mine used for $50.

I just did this swap as well during a 1 ton conversion.

New carrier w/ Detroit locker and new Superior gears, compared to the old one on the left:

Nice. Did you have to reshim the new Detroit carrier when you put it back in?

After a few problems I took it to a pro. He said always start with the shims you had in there as a starting point and check it from there.

Cool, thanks for the insight. Now I know what's ahead of me and I'll plan for it.

thanks for all the info been a real help, one last thing when I look at R&Ps I see reverse rotation and standard rotation offered?? which one would I need for a late 70s chevy d60

Standard.

"Reverse rotation" (which is an incorrect way to describe it) gears are for high pinion axles.
