I'm pulling apart a D60 front. I got this far and it seemed to me that something is maybe missing. Should there be something to hold the nut on besides torque, a pin of some kind?

I'm at a standstill anyway since I don't have the special socket. I thought the 14b one was supposed to work on both, but it has 6 prongs.

Only torque holds the outer nut. Between the inner and outer nuts is a keyed washer that puzzle pieces onto a pin on the inner nut.

Great, thanks. It'll probably make sense when I get it apart.

older 60s use a 6 pointed socket, and my 60 actually has a lock ring for the outer nut. the kind with little tabs to bend over into the notches on the nut.

Just to add. You can use the same nuts on both 60/14 spindles to simplify tools needed.

Get the stock nut setup from a ~'85+ 14 bolt. It is a single 6-prong nut, a woodruff key, and a snap ring. There isn't really anything to break on it, and it's almost impossible to install improperly. I get them from picknpull, but I would imagine the parts stores would have them too.
