There is a truck for sale here....1977 Bonanza 3/4 ton 4x4 with a Dana 60 rearend....is that as good, worse, or better than a 14bff rearend?
Will it be a straight swap into my 87 Blazer like the '73-'87 3/4 ton 14bff?
Asking $595....needs a starter and fuel pump.
I haven't seen it yet...but thought it might be a good upgrade from the 10b's for my 87.

The 60 is a good rear axle. Will it fit on your truck, I have no idea. make sure it is the rite gears to match your front.
I would not get a hole truck just for the rear axle unless you plan on parting it out to get your $ back. You can get a 14 bolt for under $500 EZ.

The plan was to get the truck for both front and rear diffs....then part out the rest...I haven't seen the truck yet so I'm not sure what the front diff is.
I wanted to get some feedback on the dana 60 rear....and I think I'll stay with searching for a 14bff and dana 44.
Thanks for the input.

As was said, may not be a good one. I had a 70' chevy with a factory D60 rear. It was the good one with 30 or 31 count splines and 4.56 gears factory. It was a Custom Camper Special. The spring pad width was different, it would not have bolted up under my K5, I checked cause I thought about running it too. You would have to cut off the pearches and weld new ones on more then likely. I would just do the normal 14FF swap and be done with it.

Are you sure it is actually a Dana 60, or that the guy listing it doesn't know what he is talking about? My guess is it is a 14bff.

A rear D60 is substantially better than a 10-bolt, but not as strong as a 14-bolt.

Most rear D60 full-floaters had 30-spline rear shafts, some have 16-spline, and a few rare ones have the beefy 35-spline. The 16 and 30 spline versions are the same diameter axleshaft and thus pretty close in strength with the edge going to the 30-spline version. 35-spline shafts are much larger.

Dane 60 rears are for jeeps :D Real men run 14FF's in th rear.

never seen an original dana 60 in one of these trucks, but if the 77s got some good parts let me know, i like 77's (my first trucks a 77, and have a few parts trucks with the yeller trim :D)

i just saw a early 70s burb with a 44/60 combo under it a couple weeks ago. i'm sure its better than any 1/2 ton combo. full floating - no c clips. would be a great upgrade, plus everyone has a 14 bolt :wink1: depends on your planned use.

i prefer buying the whole truck too. you can get so many extra parts you'd never even think about needing. just having a small tool box of extra chevy nuts and bolts is worth it to me. plus you can sell off the rest to recoup costs. my 2 cents...

The 16 and 30 spline shafts are 1.31", the SUPER rare 35 spline FF D60's use 1.5" shafts.

The 30 spline FF 14 bolts shafts are cut at a different pressure angle than dana shafts, if they were cut at the same pressure angle as Dana shafts they'd be closest to 37 spline. FF 14 bolt shafts are 1.625".

Not to mention the much stronger ring/pinion setup etc., rear D60's and FF 14 bolts are really not in the same conversation strength wise.

That being said, it is still better than a ten bolt. My guess is the truck in question doesn't even have a Dana 60.
