Sheit, didn't know there was a dam bearing in the spindle. Saw sweetK30 was sellin some. But it was so dirty when I took it apart I never saw it. How do you pull it? I need to do this tonite. Damm, guess I'm headin to harbor freight and autozone.

I guess I need a bearing puller for this. Also there is a broken rubber seal that from what I can tell goes between the stub shaft and the spindle. There was one, and it was split. Is that to keep the crud out of the spindle? Please help? Thanks.

You need to go to your local auto parts store and tell them you need an SBK-3 kit. This kit comes with the spindle bearing, thrust washer, and 2 seals (one goes just outboard of the spindle bearing and the other goes over the slinger on the stub shaft). The kits retail for about $13.00 or so per side.

Thanks bud. Can you believe napa closes at 5. Everywhere else 8 or 9. There is about half a million people living here a 1 napa. Dammit. Thanks scott!

You can use a long brass or steel rod. I think I cut off a tire iron to use when I was desperate. Someone sells a brass sleeve to replace that spindle bearing. Can't recall who it is. Anyone?

EDIT: Longfields has a spindle bushing from teflon:

Thanks. I need it tomorrow or else I would get it. My brass drift is to short. I bent a long craftsman flat head. My hand is bruised now. I missed a few times. Still can't get it out. I guess I will buy a bearing puller tomorrow.

Where does the thrust washer go. I have never seen one, so I don't know where to look. I need to read the dana 60 bible. Is there one on pirate? Thanks for all the help!!

The thrust washer goes onto the stub axle with the chamfered side towards the axle u-joint.

I would have responded sooner but i've been watching the news for the last 3 hours or so as there was a HUGE explosion and fire across the bay from me and that is all that is on every channel (16"-24" gas main line exploded). The fire has destroyed a complete neighborhood so far.

Holy crap. Not good at all. That's a big gas line. I can't find any news on it here. That sucks.

Going to bed now, but I went and looked at the axle shafts. After a close inspection, I found out what the slinger is. It looks good, also there is a brass washer or spacer, that looks good. There is a little black rubber gasket, it looks good also. I think its just the spindle bearing and seal and a bigger rubber seal that I need. I will pick up the 2 kits at 11am. Finish that up, pick up the axle housing and install that pig.

There is a lot of parts compared to a 44, and the hub weighs a ton. Smashed my finger setting it down.

That brass "washer" is the trust washer and even though the SBK-3 kit will come with a new one reuse your old one as the new ones are now plastic.

A D44 and a 10 bolt all use the same amount of parts, they are just smaller in size.

Way back when, I got introduced to those spindle bearings.

Friend of mine bought a brand new GM full-time 4wd. We were spending a lot of time in the swamps, and one day his truck started making a bad noise from the front axle.

Put it in the shop, they replaced the spindle bearings. Warranty.

About 2 replacements later, it was out of warranty. So, we figured we would do it ourselves.
Heck, we did everything else.
We didn't need any darn manuals.

Noise started, we down and pulled off both wheel hubs, replaced one and repacked both "spindle" bearings.

Noise continued. We rechecked, found nothing wrong.

Back to shop, replaced spindle bearings. Big charge.

Along about that time, he changed jobs, and was having to drive longer distances, so he traded the truck.

Year or two later, 1979, I parked my Jeep, and bought an F150.
First thing you know, I was having spindle bearing noise when in 4wd.

Pulled the hubs, "spindle" bearings looked fine.

Asked around, discovered that what I was calling spindle bearings were wheel bearings.
I knew that they were called wheel bearings, but thought maybe the name changed when you went to 4wd.

Of course, we had never changed the spindle bearings on his truck either.

Soon after that, I found the spindle bearing grease adapter that lets you grease the spindle bearings with the hub still on the truck.

You don't even have to jack it up or take off the tire.

BTW, what with all the stuff I had done to my Jeep over the years why had I not changed the spindle bearings?

Because Jeep not only oiled them from the axle, but used brass bushings instead so they did not have to be replaced often.

If you go through lots of mud or water, see if they make a grease adapter for the 60

OK, on the same page that GreenieK30 linked, is a link to the greaser.

Alot of water comes in from between the axleshaft and spindle and gets in the wheel bearings. The thread-on spindle grease tool from Longfield is available for the Dana 44 and 60 and is worth the money if you go in mud or water puddles.

Longfield Superaxles makes a better design spindle bushing:

I have a set waiting to go in my Dana 60 next time it is apart. :thumb:

X2... Longfield products are second to none...

When I tear into mine after running it for a bit, I'm going to talk to them about the bushings... I want to upgrade the joints and drive flanges with their stuff as well...

I've talked to them about having them heat treat and cryo the shaft for the doubler I'm building...

Here is a pic of the spindle bearing. My brass drift is 1" too short. I need to buy a small bearing puller or something. I am picking up the kit at 11am. So thats when my weekend starts! I have everything cleaned and painted. I should pick up the axle this afternoon. Need to have it running by 11am tomorrow. Hope I can get it done!!

And a pic of the thrust washer and seal.

Well, its your equipment, but if both sides were like that, I would pack it full of grease and run it.
That bearing looks ok.
Remember, its not a wheel bearing.
As I found out.
It does not have the load a wheel bearing has. It only supports the shaft. And only turns when the axle does.
A wheel bearing with pits like that would burn up under load, but that will never see a heavy load at speed.

It is dry, which means it needs to be packed. An index finger does good.

I would tap it back in, pack it good, smear some all over the shaft, and run it.

Thanks. I wiped out all the grease. Who knows how old the grease was from this axle. When trying to pull it, The flathead got between the rollers in there. I dont know if I messed up a little. My hand is cut and brused from the BFH I was using. I need a bearing puller. I dont own one. I might tap it in and in a few months, put that teflon bearing in there. I cleaned the crap out of the hubs also. Who knows how long that grease was in there. Thanks!!
