My friend just got back from sema... and he has this picture. Seems to be a dana 60 knuckle w/ a portal attachment and dual calipers he said.

thats still cheaper than straight unimogs no? i want details on these things.

They look bad ass but it looks like alot of leverage way out from the Knuckle pivot point. Don't know if it's even an issue, it just looks like the knuckle needs to be heavier duty or something, Just my .02 cents. Very interesting though. At $1300 each I can't see them selling vary many though ouch!

Yeah, my buddy called and ask about pricing, they told him 1300.00 EACH. They also told him a 14ff would be available early next year.

Cost aside ... a 14BFF on portals brings teh secksay.

Now, the other issue is that sure, you can get Unimog axles relatively cheap, but you then gotta upgrade them, which gets into aftermarket stuff and therefore $$.

They're drum brakes, right, so you gotta do disc, and prolly some kind of wheel/lug adapter, and then if they're the early 404 axles the portals aren't very strong, so you either gotta get like 416 (?) portals, or do aftermarket boxes ... and you know what those cost, Greg has that set... :deal:

Anyway, we know that "4x4" in uppercase is "$X$" :haha:

As far as the death wobble goes I wonder if someone could machne a stainless steel(or something stronger than the plastic) king pin bushing to replace the white plastic ones, then use the arms that use a bolt to pre load them instead of springs.(I forgot who makes those) then Im not sure how to beef up the bottom king pin are they tough enough already?

Probably some aftermarket Knuckles would be better then stock, but ofcourse more money. I dig the idea of them. A 14FF as you said would be bad ass. You would probably want to narrow the width no? As far as the fronts, I'm not sold on them. They would need to be prooven reliable in a brutal long term test before I would want them at $1300.......each.

LOL you know I just realised that , at least for me, if I was building something I would actually use those on it wouldnt be for street use anyway.

BLAH! just too damn extreme for me.

Yeah, I like Basic stuff that works and you cant beat a regular old D60/14FF disc swapped combo period.

There is a vendor on Pirate who make a replacement bushing that replaces the nylon one. Linky.

That must have a way bigger scrub radius than a stock 'mog. You'd need wheels with lots of backspacing and then they would have to be 20s to clear all that stuff I would guess.

Or stock offset Hummer wheels.

All,

Thanks for noticing our little portal wheel end project. I would encourage you to visit our website (you can google AxleTech International Motorsports to find it) to learn more about it. It was designed around an HMMWV H1 wheel - the backspacing alleviates the scrub and leverage concerns. It will package in 16.5" wheels and larger. No 20" wheels needed. Everything from the kingpins out is our design and has been analyzed extensively prior to building protoypes.

AxleTech is a major military axle manufacturer for MRAP, HET, and PLS vehicles among others so we know a little something about axle engineering. We are component testing now and will start vehicle testing and durability testing next month.

These wheel ends are not for everyone so we don't expect to sell a ton of them. We know that we have a long way to go to prove these to the 4x4 community. Just be careful with the Pirate thread mentioned above - it's five years old and references a product that is not ours.

We appreciate all the responses we have received including this thread.

I would strongly consider putting these on a 14 bolt.

Look at it this way, 4" lift in the hub assembly, the rear drive shaft gets up out of the way, so you could build a thinner wall shaft and the big hangy down 14 bolt is up 4" more than it would be other wise.

Front axle application I might need to be convinced on. Just doesn't seem like a great thing by re using the existing king pins etc. I would have to see them and then see them in use for a while for a front axle application.

Axle Tech. Might want to get a vender tag if you want to speak about this much more than you have already.

Iiiiiinteresting. Kind of Portal-Tekish

but not quite. I'd love a set on a trail rig. :D

EDIT: wow, they make some freakin' sweet stuff.
