i have a dana 60 from a military truck in my shortbed , i read on here about using washers in the top to take up the play....my left lower is a little loose, would putting washers in the top above the spring put pressure on it to take up the play..or am i thinking wrong...please help me out alot of you guys know way more about this than i do...please help, thanks again..

Replace the kingpin bushing and spring, they are very notorious for wearing out on 20+ year old axles. Its cheap and easy.

Adding washers basically increases the force on the upper kingpin which can help with death wobble when people run big, heavy, unbalanced tires. Adding washers is pretty much a last resort IMO, make sure the rest of your steering is up to par first.

ive just replaced the tie rods and checked everything and the only bad part is the left lower. all steering is all good, i dont have death wobble and it drives well..i jammed it full of grease for the time being.. so thats not hard to fix??

all dana 60 king pin style eat upper bushings and springs.

get a set of bushings and springs . i have swaped a lot in my day and even some have 2-3 peice broken bushings i pull out.

the way that king pin system works if a worn bushing up top can give some play on bottom and not let the bearing seat fully.

thanks much appreciated, whats a good place to go get the bushings and springs?? any you recommend??

just got new bushings/springs from ORD last week. Only like $18 doesn't hurt to replace them periodically. I am tearing into front end so while its half apart....
Mr. Watson also explained that when you lift a tire (heavy tire) the knuckle wants to fall and compress the spring and allowing play in the lower bearing for that time. The washers will help keep the knuckle from falling as much too.

so is it good to change the bushings and springs and (add washers) ? or just change springs and bushings and check for play and go from there ??

Change the spring and bushings, then put 2 fender washers under each cap, bolt it down and your good to go

ok fender washers, what size outside diameter ,what thickness and what size hole?? if you dont mind...thanks (1/2 hole 1/8 thick??)

I think 2" OD, ID doesn't matter as much. I haven't had mine apart for a couple years. I can tell you what I have here this next week when I tear into mine.

ok thanks, let me know.. i have here 2inch with a 1/4 hole 1/8 thick..

They are a 1/16 thick IIRC with a 1/2 inch hole in the center. They are about the same diameter as the cap. They fit right in.......What size tire are you running? 35's require 2 washers under each cap. 33's require 1 washer. I just did this before blazer bash.

i have 37s on hurricanes, its been like that for 2 years...the trucks been pieced togeather for like 8 trucks..

speaking of death wobble, we were out wheeling and before we went out on the road i unlocked the hubs , looked it over and went about 15 miles at 55mph it drove good, then in town it shook that bad i had to stop...the frame broke in two spots behind the steering box, i bought the weld on kit and the bolt on brace and its ok for now. but i checked it for inspection and the left lower was loose and the tierods were bad, i changed the tie rods . ok ill try 2 and change the spring and bushings and go from there...thankyou lottts.

That's what I used, one on each side. All my components were replaced, still got some wobble. Put one washer each side and now it's smooth and steady with 39.5" TSL.

good king pin parts and new bushings and springs with no washers and 35" radials with no vibs or death wobble at all. even has 8ft or 9ft fisher on it in the winter time.
