Dana 60F rebuild, R&P set up ???

No, to get the carrier bearing preload spot on yes you do. I have only used a case spreader once on a D 70.

Did you make some set up bearings Matt?

Nope, you don't need one.

Here's the deal, I have this D60, all is good with it, stock form.

I'm adding spool, will be re-using the ring and pinion all ready installed in it. I need to just get the spool swapped out with the carrier thats in it now.

All the other things I have planned for it can happen at anytime after the spool is installed.

Can I just pull the carrier out, swap the shims and bearings over to the spool and drop it right back in? or will there be big troubles?

First, you almost certainly won't be able to get the carrier bearings off without destroying them. There is no place to grab onto the bearings, to get them off without destroying them requires a several hundred dollar tool.

As for the backlash, you definitely should check it if it's a ring and pinion that you care about. There is a decent chance that you won't need to change shims but I've certainly dealt with ones that did need a change.

if you check the backlash before, then check it after, and its the same or close, it will be fine.

12 ton shop press, bearing separators, bearing pullers.

I've pulled the bearings on several other axles with limited success, I'm pretty sure these would'nt come off without a fight, which would end in their destruction.
OR, just pay the guys down at the local diesel shop the 150 bones to do it for me along with the new bearing kit. They have always done great work in the past.

or make a trip to Utah county and I can help you get them off and set back up again. It's a pretty easy job especially if the housing is out.

Most of the time I can get the bearings off without destroying them. The bad thing is sometimes the carriers aren't machined exactly right and it takes a couple of tries to get the preload and back lash where they need to be, so the bearings have to come off a time or three. I used to have some set up bearings for a 60 but I think I loaned them out and they never came back.

Holiday season is busy Matt I could come down with some setup bearings then we wouldn't even have to pull the old ones off.

But I am busy until January:doah:

BigBlock72, thanks for the offer!:waytogo: Eric, , if you've got the set up bearings, that would be great, Let me know when it's convenient, I'll get us some lunch and you some fuel money and we'll just make a day of it.
I have the axle out and on jack stands. I'll start cleaning it up and get it ready to make the swap, that way it will go relatively smooth.

I want to watch:D I need to replace my inner axle seals on my front 60 and this would be a good opportunity to see how it all goes together.

Set-up bearings are pretty much a must. The only concearn i have about it is that if you set it all up with set-up bearings and get it all just right , then the prudent thing would be to install new bearings on the carrier .
If you put the old ones back in the carrier bearing preload will NOT be the exact same as bearings, and races wear evenly.

While you're in there why not pop the pinion out install the bearings and do an actual check of carrier bearing pre-load? Then put it all back together. This method will also affor you the opportunity to change the pinion seal and a wise man may just put a speedi-sleeve on the yoke- just for safe measure:wink1:

Check the backlash before you tear it down, then set the backlash the same with the new carrier. With a used gear set you want the new pattern to overlay the old pattern as close as possible. Dana used to cast indents in the carriers so that you could use finger style pullers to remove the carrier bearings but they stopped doing that. If you replace the pinion bearings be sure to use the slinger and baffle dimensions to calculate the shim pack thickness when you put it back together.
