This is a dumb question, but i just picked up 2 axles under a 79 f350. The rear is suppose to be a d70 but the cover looks just like the dana 60s cover, so i think its a d60, but after looking at this http://coloradok5.com/axleguide.shtml , it apears that the cover is the same? So does the d60 and d70 have the same cover? Either way i only paid $500 for both which came straight out of a running truck :woot: :woot: :woot: Plus the drums on the rear look kinda small, no where near the size of a a 14bolts

Post up some pics. A 70 looks skinnier, and an 80 even skinner then a 60, if that makes sense (the center section that is). What is the Diameter of the tubes? You can run the Bill of Materials number.

Should be a tag on the driver side of the axle cover, runs vert between two of the cover bolts. Mine (81 E350) has D70 and the ratio stamped on it, plus LS for limited slip. I think the 70 cover is bigger, they just have the same shape, so it fools alot of folks.

ok this is what i got

3 54 D8TA TB
693901-1

Damn well i was hoping for 4 10s or 456s, but i guess i got stuck with 3.54s, so does what do i have??? i guess no limited slip either

damn well after googling those numbers looks like its just a 30 spline d60, oh well i only wanted the front d60 anyways, the rear was just a free bonus

$500 for a HP kingpin D60 is almost a steal. There is nothing wrong with a D60 rear if your rig has gone on a hefty diet.

Most D60's and 70's use the same cover. The easiest way to tell them apart is the big "60" or "70" cast into the center section.

Either the 16 or 30 spline shafts of a rear 60 are okay, though not exactly bulletproof. A buddy of mine ran the 16 spline version in his 460 powered Ford with 38's and a welded diff for several years and beat the snot out of it on trails with no issues. He did finally replace it with a D70.

Ford, for whatever reason, didn't use a D70 in the 78 and 79 F350 4x4's. They used a D60 rear. But the 2wd's used the D70...why? I have no clue.
