Hey y'all,

Was at the local pick your part recently and found a Ford 350 with a SRW D70 in it equipped with a Power Lok. Seemed to hold good, so I pulled it. What I'm wondering is whether there's any way to confirm that it will/won't fit my rear axle without opening it up. I have an 82 GMC CC dually.

The power-lok takes 35-spline axles, which I know is the same as mine, but if I look at the Detroit or Powertrax website, they sell several different 35-spline lockers for the D-70. Some references are made to a Chev axle with 1/2 or 5/8 pinion offset--any ideas? Oh, btw, I can't find any casting numbers on my axle

Better question maybe--do I want the powerlok or should I try to sell it and get a detroit? I have no experience with 'em.

Don't know what you mean here. It won't just bolt up because the spring perch width, shock mounts and the wheel mounting surface will be different.

If you're wondering whether the dana 70 has the same gears as your current front end you should take the cover off and post up the numbers on the ring gear.

There are no Chevy produced 35 spline axles. If you have a FF 14 bolt they are 30 spline (though cut at a different pressure angle, they are closed to 37 spline dana shafts).

I would bet the pinion offset has to do with carrier breaks i.e. some gears fit 4.10- and the other offset carrier fits 4.56+

Depends on what you want to do with the truck. I've heard that powerloks are some of the best posi's.

Sorry, my bad. I pulled the PowerLok unit, not the entire diff. What I'm wondering is whether the carrier itself will fit into my diff. I wanna keep my dually :-)

I know there are no Chevy 35-spline axles. I'm talking about a Dana 70. My truck has a dually D70 rear, which has 35 spline axles. Other D70 axles are 23 and 32 spline.

I think you're right.

I've also read that the Dana 70HD uses a D80 carrier. That doesn't make sense to me, as the D80 has a differnet ring gear diameter than the D70. So it may have D80 size gears or the gears would be specific to it with a larger hole to fit the bigger carrier. Or my info's all crap on that one

Yeah, looks ideal for what I need now that I'm reading up on it. The truck's not going to be offroaded much, pretty much any offroading will be vehicle recovery. Otherwise it's a tow rig, and we've got issues with ice up here :D
