In strength and size how does a Dana 70 compare to a 14 bolt? Are the lug patterns the same?

Thanks,
Ray

This is an age old debate, and you will hear pro's and cons for both.I personally like the 14bolt.Detroit's are cheaper, most come with 4:10s,and they are easier to find than a SW 70.The bolt pattern is the same.

I like my D70U, it is smooth as a babys bottom on the underside of the pumpkin, more clearance than a 14 bolt too. I guess other than they are about the same strength wise.

^^ What he said, plus there are several different versions of the dana 70. Some you can gears up to 7.17, Some only have one gear choice. You just gotta make sure you get the right one, otherwise your stuck with a turd.

They both are good axles. Use whatever you can get or whatever floats your boat. I have a 14bff in my K5 because it was an easier cheaper swap but I will have a D80 in my rock buggy I am going to build since I have it and it was free. A D80 is stronger then both those axles but you loose a little more clearnece with it since it has a 11.25 or 11.5" ring gear.

Depending on the 70 like was said you can get deeper gears than a 14FF (they only go down to 5.38). I also want to say the 70 has 35 spline axled where the 14FF is 30 spline.

Dually 70s are more common than the wide dually 14FF also if you wanna run Stock HMMWV wheels.

Lockers for the 70 are the same price as a 14 bolt if you have a 2 piece open carrier for the 70.

35 spline 70 axle is actually slightly smaller than a 30 spline 14 bolt.

70 comes with a slightly higher torque rating than a 14 bolt.

Lower gearing is available with the 70.

I've seen a dana 70 front :eek1:

It had drums lol

The only reason to get one or the other is gearing and thats it.I got rid of my built 14 bolt for the 70 I have now.It was time to regear and I didnt want to be stuck with highway gears running the 14 bolt :D

They still make Dana 70 fronts, that is where 35 spline stubs come from.

Also Dyna-Trac makes a Dana 80 front.:eek1:

My bro is gonna make a rear steer 70 using c's and knuckles from a front dana 70 :eek1:
