Dana 70

There's nothing wrong with his answer, you've got to understand that there are TONS of D70 variations out there. Not only differences between the brands they are used in but also in the specific applications within the brand (not to mention the none automotive equipment they were used in).

Yours is not a black & white question, you will have to either take a tape measure with you when you look at the axle or get the BOM's.

I understand that(I have read 100% of the DANA 70 manuals) and I also did not go into details about the 100 questions I asked him.

But, when I asked him if there was a manual that gave the wms dimensions, his answer was if I could get the BOM off of the AXLE that was IN FRONT of me, then he could tell me how wide it is.

If the axle is in front of me, Ican measure it....that's my point.....and that is why he is a dumb ass.

ANYWAYS, If you are looking for one, it seems like you will more likely find one in a FORD, then DODGE, the CHEVY, then IHC, then AVANTI (ha ha)

I have a manual that gives every model that had one in it either front or rear. Very helpful when going to the junkyard.

I am just trying to find one that can replace the 14 bolt in my SUBURBAN. It looks like I am going to have to move perches, unless I get lucky, but it wouldn't be fun if everything bolted in......just easy.....

Tomseviltwin, you are correct, I mis-spoke. The differential I was refering to is the D70HD-3. This one is the bastard, and is NOT to be confused with the venerable old D70HD, which was used in countless pickup dually's. Sorry for the confusion.

The axle I have is the D70HD-3. I got it cheap and have done nothing with it yet, so maybe it wasn't such a good find. I'll have to make some calls.

Don't kill the idea of that D70-3 HD so fast - they are good rear ends - they just are difficult to get super low gear sets for due to the pinion off-set . For someone looking to stay in the mid 4 ratio's and down it would make a fine choice of a Dana 70 axle .

well looks like you wont be using those 5.86's after all:doah:

better you find out now instead of taking it apart and spending money on it only to find that ur gears wont work.

In response to questions about breaking Dana 70 and FF14 axles. I'm now running Dutchman FF14 axles and I've had no problems out of them. I still use one of the pieces of a D70 axle as a paperweight. It was the spined end that broke about 1.5" past the splines.

All breaks occurred on '79K10 with mild 355,4spd, 44" Swampers. The Dana 70 in question is a 70HD with 4.10s and a welded diff out of a 81 F350 cab and chassis dually. The FF14 has 5.13's and a Detroit. It came from a random 3/4 ton.

Broken D70 shaft #1: Sitting in my driveway, which at the time was a slight incline, I decided to spin my 44" TSLs a little bit in 2wd. One tire rubbed a hole in the garden hose that I didn't see, the other didn't move because the driver's side axle exploded.
Broken D70 shaft #2: The second axle exploded when I made a hard right hand turn at a traffic light. That explosion occurred inside the spindle, causing it to expand and snap both spindle nuts. The expansion of the spindle also kepth the bearings in place, allowing me to drive home.
Bronken FF14 shaft: I was fooling around off road, trying to climb a steep grass covered bank in 2wd. (44" Boggers at this time) After a heavy throttle attack that didn't get me to the top, I rolled back and eased off the clutch trying to keep traction and crawl up. There was a loud bang and the whole truck jumped when the 14 bolt axle broke. I drove it home on the Detroit. I got a junkyard axle to put back in it, but as soon as my Dutchman's arrived, I put them in. Now I carry a set of stock FF14 shafts for spares.

This needs to go on Mythbusters.

I thought it was common knowledge that the smaller pinions in the DANA are actually very resilient pieces. If you are breaking pinions before anything else, then you have an angle problem or a binding problem. Pinion size is NO concern of mine, gear selection is.

I plan on running the 7.17's in the front and rear....

It looks like a Dana 70 U out of a Terd Van would be our best bet......width wise anyways.......

For those that have swapped them for their 14 bolt FF, which one did you use and how much "massaging" was necessary to bolt the Dana in?

Thanks or the help!

Who said anything about breaking pinions? I've broken rear 14 bolt and Dana 70 axles. I've broken teeth off the ring gear of a front 60 running 5.13's, but I didn't mention any broken pinions.

Stop dumping the clutch at 6K rpm with 44's...on dry pavement.
