I have a 86 Dually with a Dana 70 and have been told that their is 3 variations of this axle and that lockers are not made for some of the them. Is this true and how do I identify the axle to confirm.

D70HD is all you need to tell them. Its in a class by itself. There is also the BOM stamping on one side of the axle tubes. That's Bill Of Materials which is also very useful to identify the rearend and to get the correct parts for it.
