Anybody have info on D80 rear axles? What is the deepest gear ratio you can get for them? What lockers are available? I looked on Randy's R&P site but that didn't help much. Whats out there?

Harley

i do know the pinion nut is 450-500 on the tourqe spec and the carrier to ring gear bolts are 220 ish . you will need some big tools. :eek1:

I've seen ratio's up to 5.38

Detriot makes lockers in the 35 & 37 spline count.
Dana made a Power-Lok and a 4 pinion Trac-Lok for it.

oh btw....

"is like trying to beat a fat kid to a donut" :D

Just how fast does a fat kid run to a donut? Marve must be pretty slow!

I know the Detroit is pretty pricy for the D80, but the Lock-Rite fits inside the stock open carrier. It's considerably cheaper.

why a dana 80? thats a big freakin axle:eek1:

they were 35s...not sure on hp and torque but prolly around 800 hp and about 1400ft pounds...oh and he drove it on the street..

funny you mention this i know a guy who broke a 80 axle shaft!!it was in a superduty diesel pulling truck...

Dana 80 axleshaft aren't really proportional to the rest of the axle...the center section is where the beef is at. D80's either have 35 spline or 37 spline axles, and the 37 spliners aren't much bigger than 35's. The same 1-1/2" diameter as D60 front inner and D70 rear shafts.

It free. The R&P went out on my Dodge and it was replaced under warranty so I had them put the old rear axle in the bed of the truck to take with me. So now I have a D80 rear axle sitting in the garage that just needs a R&P and a locker to be ready to go in my upcoming buggy project. I am going to shave the rear heavily. I plan on going as far as cutting the bottom off the diff and welding on a new steel plate. I may see if I can get one of my machinist buddies to shave the R&P down like some guys are doing with 14bff's so I can have it shaved even more for GC. :D

I also am going to use a D80 because I like to be different. Everybody runs 14bff or D70's so I have to be a little different and run a D80.

How heavy is it? Is it really worth it? youll never break a 14 bolt... or a 70

x2. if you break the 14b you are definitely doing something wrong. if so, u can chromo shafts, then ud definitely be set

Definetly... in the long run it would be cheaper to get a 14 bolt from an m1008, already has a detriot...

Take any fullfloat axle. Weld up diff, use gear set of choice, wheel piss out of it.

I would be willing to wager that the D80 hybrid from my Dodge is probably lighter or about the same weight as a 14bff in my K5. I picked up the empty housing (include R&P) for the D80 by myself and I know for a fact the brake assemblies are lighter then the brakes on my 14bff.

Of the two 35 spline D80's in my garage they are much heavier than any of the 14FF that I have ever had . The chunk has much more material and the tubes are thicker too. It felt heavier than HD70's and they weigh in more than a 14FF. Just food for thought.
