i have an 87 k30 454tbi, got a line on some dart pro 1 310cc heads. 121 cc chamber, intake 2.250 and exhaust 1.880. Think I can get em for half the cost jegs has them for. Assembled never been installed. Hate to pass up a good deal if this will work with my rig, anyone know what would be involved? Worth it? the motor I have is sound but I'm all for upgrades in hp...

Are they oval or square port heads? I think you should buy them either way but I wouldnt put square port heads on a truck.

They are rectangle. It will make better power with ovals. The little 600 cfm throttle body will be out of air before you are into the meat of those heads. I would keep looking unless you are wanting to build a 600hp mud runner and are planning on pulling the fi and adding a single plane and adding a 850+ carb.

yep they're rectangle. not gonna get rid of the fuel injection and there's no mud or need for 600hp out here in az. let me rephrase...i don't have a need for a 600 ponies with what i do. but the stock 454 with the 230hp is a little anemic. still may check out the heads tho

If you can get them for ridiculously cheap, buy them, and then trade them to someone for a set of heads that would work for you?

Martin

You would need an intake also.

I would get them just to get them, then find a reason to build something to put em on.....at least that's what I would do

yeah think i'm gonna give dude a call and see what's up. i really didin't have plans on any mods for the motor until i got the suspension and axles right. keep ya posted, thanks for the info too

Id jump on those. Even if you trade them, BBC stuff is so popular it shouldnt be hard to find what you want.

yeah i talked to the guy, going in with cash tomorrow morning. honestly i don't think he knows what he has. at least i can sell them for a profit or trade for parts or service

stock bbc have a TINY cam in them . look there also for more power. but dont forget computer friendly.

yeah, when it comes to the motor i don't need anything crazy. more so just want reliable, smooth power. for right now it's fine, maybe towards the end of the year i'll look into building something up

Nah thats lame, get a big old cam to go with those nice heads, and feel what some real power is :D

fyi those heads and a big old cam wont work much at all the way thay should .

stock 454 with tbi or 80-90 emmisions stuff was real low compression .

My old 89 GMC that I SAS'd had a stock rebuilt 454 in it with TBI. Even with 3.73 gears, TH400 and 40" boggers, still had a lot of power. I played in the mud, and that can take a lot of power to run.

Truth here. Any cam to feed those heads to get them to work uptop would require at least 10:1 compression. That means a rebuild with dome job pistons instead of flats.

Agreed. Stock comp thru the 80's was ~7.9 so a piston change would be mandatory unless you're using a blower with those heads.

Not to always go the other way but I have made low compression 454s run plenty hard with good heads and a bigger cam. Sure if you were to build it from the ground up you would buy pistons but if you are just improving what you have it will be fine if you are smart in choosing the cam and setting the ignition. I got 2nd with my old pile in the truck pulls. In fact my current 454 build only has 8 to 1 compression. I didn't think it was worth the money to put pistons in a currently great running gen vi 454. I wouldn't consider building a truck motor with those heads. I would look at afr ovals.
