how hard is it to remove a dash pad without damaging it?

Not hard at all. Just be gentle if it's really brittle, I've never had one crack while I removed it. Remove IP face plate, Remove screws on the bottom of front dash lip middle-passenger side, remove 2 screws in each side (only accessible with doors open), grasp firmly, pull back to disengage the clips from the metal dash underneath, lift off.

I would load up the dash pad with armorall or some kind of oil and let it soak for a while if its brittle its saved me a few times.
