Dash (pics)

Wow that looks really good. I dont like the gauges from 95, my work truck is a 95 GMC 1500 and I think the interior is gawd awful. But that looks really really good and with the autometers its unbeleivable. Nice work and bravo!

hey man it looks really really sweet. i was wanting to do the same swap in my 88 blazer but wasnt sure how to go about it so i fiugred i'd go on ck5 to see if anybody had done it and sure enough the first thread i clicked on was here and i was amazed and now i really wanna do it in my truck. i had an 95 extended cab 1500 and i loved the dash in it and i wanna put that in my 88. so i'm gonna see what i can do w/ the info i got off ur page man. again thats really awsome.

back from the dead. Im truely em jealous, amazing work. Here is another thing to add to my dream build along with the duramax and allison :haha:

sweet azz dash

hey that looks awesome i was thinking about doing something like that to mine too. you did a bitching job. do you know how far concord is from OC i was thinking about trying to get this done b4 the end of the year. also if you could let us know like a list of all the parts u used form the donor that would be cool :eek1:

looks bad azz man good work:bow:

Man, this thread is back from the dead. Concord is in the Bay Areawhich is probably 400 miles away from Orange County. Most of the parts for mounting were just fab. As with any swap, grab as much as you can that mounts to the part you are swapping. You can always throw away unused parts. I believe I wrote some install steps in a thread from the past. Try searching my posts and threads from 3 or 4 years ago.

dash

cool thanks. i actually found a guy parting out a 97 silverado i am supposed to go pick up the stuff this weekend so i am just gonna take everything i can pull out in one day. and ill serch you're posts if i can figure out how lol. well thanks again for the pointers

I know this thread is old, but this is sweet, and I have a donor 97 sitting right outside. I wonder, if I remove all the wiring out of my 91 k5 and replaced it with all the wiring, engine, tranny, a/c, and all out of the 97, if that would work?

A full swap like you are suggesting would definitely work. There will be a lot of custom fitting concerning ac/heater, steering column, etc. But having a complete donor right there will make measurements and parts very easy. The donor I had, we took the motor, tranny, wire harness, and computer, and put it into my neighbors FJ. My advise is to think it through completely, take lots of pics and notes before you tear into it (from the dome light switch all the way to the o2 sensors). Plan it out and good luck.

I was really glad to see you run across this thread again! I was looking at the 97 yesterday and saw something that gave me great relief. In one of your pics above, you show the driver side, and I noticed that the dash was flush with the inside of the door jam. I had measured the 97 and the Blazer, and noticed about a 3" difference. But then I remimbered that you cut off some of the 97 dash, at the window, so it recessed into the Blazers door jams, where the 97 dash flares out, therefor being flush with the Blazers jams.

I have a few questions, how do you get the dash out of the 97, w/o messing it up. I've looked( a little ) and have not seen an easy way to do this.

I saw a piece of pipe going across the bottom front of the dash, I think i will need to transplant that, so the dash will have something to sit on, my question is, whats holding it on at the windshield?

Transplanting the dash is my only real worry. If I can get past this, the rest should be no prob, as I can fab up anything I need. I thought that it would be cool to install the hvac in the Blazer the same way as it is in the 97. If cutting the dash moves the hvac equipment forward into the fire wall, I could cut out and box a relief into the fire wall to fit, and have just the accumalator sticking out.

My thoughts were, was to make a rough template of the 97 fire wall and transpose it on the Blazer, and just fill in the holes, or just cut out the fire wall completly, and replace it with a solid piece, and cut out the reliefs as needed, to keep it clean.

I think, as far as the lights go, most should wire up with the 97 wire harness, except for the tail lights.

I hate to be a bother, but any help would be much appreciated.

Michael

@ the windsheild I left about 3 to 4 inches of the old dash metal for the new to sit on. I used rubber for a garage door bottom seal from the local hardware store to kept it from vibrating against the metal. I converted the vaccum system (original) to actuated (new) for the hvac system. In other words, I used the 75' system with the new controller. You may not have room for the 97' hvac system under the dash if you shorten it. I have seen the install w/o cutting the dash, but I am to tall to have the dash sticking out that far. Remember to measure twice ( or a dozen times ) and cut once. As for removing the dash, it is screws and bolts. You will need to use the tubed steel you mention for structure of the new dash. I used the orignal steering column and the tube snugs up under the column when completed. To install the dash, you will have to drop the column to provide room, and then bolt it back up. Just as a note, I made all the 75' wiring work with the new dash (no ecm or wire harness from the new). My expertise at the time was 15+ years of automotive electronics. To me it was easy to pull up schematics and adjust with a relay here and a diode there. I am not sure what your experience is, so I can not tell you if it would be easier to do it one way or the other. My thought is that swapping the harness and ecm would be easiest for most. I personally love the challenge, which is why we share and learn on this forum. Once again, good luck and post some pics of your success.

Glad to see you still on here, hopefully you will be on here in about 5 years when I start my new blazer project!

Or mabey I will do this in my dually, one way or the other I am going to do this it looks absolutely unreal

Thanks for the info, I like you am tall 6' 4", so I understand cutting the dash.

Since you were using the 75 wiring, did that allow you not to use the fuse panel on the drivers side of the dash?

Also, as a side note, I suck at automotive wiring!

I used the 75' fuse panel and some additional fuse panels that I added for audio and lights.
