Data Recording for Chip Burn

This may be a rookie question, but how do I do it? And please explain this like you would to a 5 year old- I've been reading through some of the posts in this section and there is a lot of terminology I don't understand.

From what I have read, I've gotten that it is better to do some data recording prior to having a new chip burned, rather than just sending in a sheet with all my specs.

One other thing- anyone have any suggestions to getting to the chip in an 88 K5? That sucker is tucked away, and I don't really want to rip out all of the ac duct work.

Contact whoever is going to burn your chip. If it's a straight forward combination they probably won't need any data.


Remove the glove box and it's not to bad to get the computer out.

I got the glove box out, but I can't get to the bolts in the very back (front?). The ones closest to the firewall. Is it better to remove the entire computer, or just the chip cover?

Bolts? Isn't there a metal "strap" that is held in with a 10MM bolt towards you as you are looking at the ECM? That should be all you need to pull to remove the ECM, plus of course disconnecting the wiring plugs.

Yep, i can have my ECM out in less than a minute. In fact, i'll be removing it maybe today to install my new chip that Brian sent me for my EGR issue i'm working on.

Chip discussion

Are they cheap to have done? My 90 still has the original TBI engine with a mild cam. what are the benefits of these things? I'm thinking of doing some small mods this spring on mine too
