Well, I didn't think my measly amount of work would do for a build thread, but oh well, who cares.

Here she was the day after I brought her home.

I quickly dumped the old 31's that day and put on a spare set of 33's I had

Now fast forward a year or so later and 120 miles a day back and forth to work. Transmission blows up, so in starts going the parts I've collected.

Now my goal here is to keep a reasonable DD but still able to pound it out on the trails and make it home. I wanted very little or no lift and 36-38" tires to make up for clearance.

I got a deal on some 38x12.5x16.5" TSL's. Another deal on the 8-lug rims pictured ($20 for all 4) and my tire choice was set. Now just had to make them fit.

First went in the 14ff, rebuild with 5.13's and detroit. To match is a rebuilt D44 with alloy shafts, warn premiums, 5.13's and an ARB.

And that's how she sits now. Axles are in and driving (no brakes yet). Tires stuff good with driveway testing and so far can't see any rubbing. Will test more once she's drivable again.

Last week picked up a running drivetrain. Good 350/sm465/np208. I just needed the clutch hardware to mate up to an NV4500 I had from a craigslist deal a few months ago. I'll rebuild the 350 with vortec heads, edelbrock intake, flattops, new rods, pins, cam, roller rockers, etc... All crap I've collected off ebay, but in good shape. So plan will be rebuild 350/NV4500/NP208. I should be starting on the drivetrain swap in about 2wks.

Anyways, this is how she sits now. Getting my new rotors for front and rear, rebuilding 2 sets of calipers tomorrow and she'll be drivable again at low speeds (only 1st and reverse are working in the current tranny).

As you can see, pretty much what I was aiming at. Good clearance with big tires, strong axles and a good (soon to be) drivetrain with OD for highway driving, but still more than capable off-road when I want it to be.

And I wasn't planning on a soft top, but found one in good shape for a not-so-bad price and had to have it :)

Any ideas are appreciated. I'm not opposed to a small lift, but probably not over 2" or so. Troopers are pretty nasty around here about getting you for small crap like that. I've even had one refuse to let me continue to drive down the road in my old jeep cherokee with 6.5" lift on 35's because he said it wasn't legal for Virginia highways. Want to keep this one capable and inconspicuous, yet still a lot of fun.

Looks good, I'm glad there are still some out there that don't want to tear up precious sheetmetal. In Washington state, it's OK to have lift as long as your bumpers are within a certain distance of the ground. My project Jimmy is getting the ORD 3" lift, that'll get it up off the ground a bit, get good travel, and keep it low. I know out there in Virginia lift laws are strict, but a little lift "should" be OK.

Virginia I think it's like 21" front, 22" rear. Measured from bumper or frame, whichever is higher (to stop people from installing dropped bumpers to bypass laws).

If I do a lift, I will probably do a shackle reversal in the rear for about 2". Then I have a set of 4" lift springs for the front. I might yank a leaf from them to get the front about 2" and leave it at that.

As for tearing up sheetmetal. I cut about 3" front, top and rear out of the fenders.

I also figure if I ever do a 2" lift, I should be good to run 39-40" tires as well without many problems lift-wise. Next plan before painting is to fix the rockers and tailgate rust, make/buy some new molding to go around the new fender well openings, then paint to keep a "stock" look to the untrained eye.

Where is VA do you live? I don't get hassled much out here in the eastern VA. Still have the SM465 with 208 adapter? Looks good. I like the big tires with no lift.

Fredericksburg. Don't get too much hassle here in town, but I work in northern VA or DC most of the time and going up and down I95 is asking for trouble with a big lift.

I have the SM465. Got rid of the adaptor. I also have an NV3500 in great shape and a 700r4 that needs rebuilt.

I guess things are never easy.

Was hoping to fix the 700r4 and sell it off to recoup some costs. 1st and reverse were the only things left. Wouldn't shift past first. Was hoping it was something simple but no, doesn't look like it is...

Governor looks good.

At least there weren't tons of tiny parts and shavings floating around... Maybe something is salvageable...

looks like its getting there. looks like your trannys cooked. I never had much luck with 700r4's, so i finally switched over to a th400:D

I lived in fredericksburg for 12 years and never really had any problems with the cops. I work in springfield, so I spent lotsa time on 95.
I have been driving this for 5 years driving all over the east coast,
I have never been pulled over in it.

Maybe it's just my bad luck. Haven't been pulled in the blazer, but was pulled in the jeep on the interstate 3 times by troopers. The first time was a mess. I was actually broke down (o2 sensor wire ripped out and ground out against the block, blowing the engine mgmt fuse).

I was under the jeep (cherokee sitting on 6" lift and 35's at the time I think) on the side of the interstate when the trooper wrote me around 10 tickets. One for each tire being oversized, one for each bumper being over the legal height. One for the rear window (had a couple stickers around the outer edges) for rearview obstruction. One for defective equipment (front windshield had a crack above the rearview mirror). One for defective equipment (one of the KC daylighters was busted up on the front bumper). And one for the jeep being the wrong color (was listed as black on DMV and I had done a camo paint job on it a few months before with a black base)

Same guy pulled me 2wks later and didn't write anymore tickets, but did tow the vehicle saying it wasn't legal for public roads.

Yeah I've just had really bad luck with it.

What did you do to him to make him that POed, sleep with his girlfriend? I have been pulled over once in my M715 for being to loud but it was 4 in the morning and I was going to work.

I dunno... He was actually quite pleasant as he was handing them all out. I was a little annoyed when he pulled up behind me while I was underneath the jeep splicing wires to fix the O2 sensor in the rain and he asked me for license and registration. No, not "Need some help.." or "Are you alright..." but "Get out from under there and get me your info now.."
