Friend of mine has a 97 Lumina (3.1L) spark plug stripped out. Whoever had it before apparently liked to tighten them as hard as they could... took wayyyyyy more torque then needed to get them out.

Of course its the hardest one to get to in the back left hand corner of the engine.

I'd love to get this thing fixed without removing the head, but I can't even see the thing without a mirror, let alone get a helicoil drilled/tapped in there.

Apparently in 88-96 you could tilt the engine to get to the O2 sensor, etc... but I can't find anything about 97+. Chilton's ignores the topic altogether.

Any help would be appreciated. Anyone know if you can tilt the engine 97+? Several places sell tilters for 88-96.. think it would work?

Tomorrow I might try just removing the dogbones and using a prybar to see what happens....

(This would be so much easier if there were tools at his place.. ugg)

Don't use a heli coil, use a time cert instead. Heli coils like to come out when used in spark plug threads. A time cert is almost always a permanent repair.
