i was makin a real tight turn in the walmart parking lot (did you know supertech windshield washer fluid is now $2.50 for a gallon? wtf!) and the rearend locked up midway through the turn. anyway, i straightened it out, and backed up about 10 feet, cause sometimes that unlocks it. didnt help this time, so i was like "f**k it, i gotta get home." as i was driving out of the parking lot, i heard a loud CLANK!( /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif) and the rear end unlocked. im guessing my gov-lock is in its death-throes, so how long do yall think it has before it grenedes?/forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif

and, on that note, if it goes, im gonna replace the whole rear axle with a 14BFF out of an '88+ truck. what gears did they come with? 4.10 and 3.73? 3.42 would be nice, i dont want to have to regear my frontend with that SAS a few months away.

what kind of rear end? unless its a 14bff.. blowing the govlock should disable the rear end pretty well.. when i blew mine.. i took out the carrier too..

Yeah, same here.
When my Gov-lock blew I had to use the front axle to get home. I just pulled the rear shaft and slapped the lid from a spray paint can on the output a little duck tape and no leak! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

yeah.. take the cover off and look.. if you must have 3.42s, get a semi floater or a 12 bolt.. my 12 bolt is 3.40 that replaced the 3.42 10 bolt..

i want a 14BFF no matter what, cause i was gonna swap to one anyway. but if they dont come in 3.42 factory, screw it, ill run 4.10s and keep my hand off that transfer case lever /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

i think they MAY have come in 3.42 but im thinking youd have to find a 3/4 ton one with a 4 speed in front of it for some reason..

I worked on an 87 V20 last week, it had 3.42s with a 700R4.

and that was a full-floater rear end?

A lot of 2wd 14FF came with 3.73, I am not sure of any lower. A 3.73 gear set for the front is easy to find (almost free) and the carrier will not need to be changed.

Oops, nope, forgot that fact, sorry. It was an SF.

dont do that! get my hopes up and all! jeez /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

yea, i would imagine that 3.73 gears would be pretty common. i dunno, i guess i dont want to deal with tearing the front end out of the truck (having to reassemble it is my biggest problem /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif).

anyway, thanks for your help yall
