death wobble

I had it also. try the shock mounts. I thought everything was tight but found out the lower mounting bolt came loose, But I have quad shocks up front.

My buddy stop his DW after adding a dual stablizer and leaving one on in the stock location.Only other thing done is crossover and 4 degree shims but it still had DW till stablizer's. He has 12" of lift and running 39 19:50's on a 90 sub. rides like a caddy now

Band-aid...not a fix. You know it's fixed if you can go for a drive without any steering stabilizer and not get DW.

well hell it works and it drives great and he still can wheel the hell out of it
 Nice second post noob. I band-aided my death wobble by adding Hydro-assist steering. It tightened all aspects of my steering up and removed the stress off of the frame around the box. :)

Death wobble is usually caused by one of two things. Either worn parts or excessive or not enough caster. Since most of us with 60's have lifted vehicles with king pin style 60's caster is not an adjsutable item. There for a good steering stabalizer setup is a must and also making sure the springs on the top king pin is not fatigued. Any wear to the plastic bushing is bad. Many people replace the bushing and spring every 6 months just to be safe especially running large tires that cause extra stress. I also made a shim for the top of each king pin spring to make it tighter. Hydro assist absorbs dw before it even begins so that's an ideal way to go.

2002!!!!!! Old posts don't die.
And a steering stabilizer justs masks the problem. Yes, you can make a spacer, or use fender washers to increase preload on the kingpin springs

alright im bout to revive this thing again.....its pretty simple...if you got DW start with the easy stuff, tighten bolts, tires balanced? all steering componets in good shape. no worn balljoints, then you can rebuild the kingspins if none of that works. im surprised no one makes a stronger spring for this instead of doing the washer add. now...as for adding the stabilizer or hydro assist...this is not covering it up...if this was a cover up then axles would not come fromthe factory with a stabilizer. major corporations are not going to put out something that is covered up. now with that being said. you steering system is not equiped to handle such large tires and that is why you upgrade to dual stabilizers or hydro assist. lets look at this analaogy..you dont put a 300 pound woman with a 120 pound man. so...if that does happen then you need a really soft mattress to absorb all that vibration. about the best analogy i can think of. sorry if that offends anyone. so, in conclusion it can be anything up front but its up to you to figure it out. so get under your rig and learn what does what and try to figure it out yourself. it will make you feel better if you do.

mine has the wobble at 25 miles per hour or slower i have to hit the brakes or turn really hard one way to get it to stop

i have a 83 blazer 6inch suspension with a dana 60 drop pitman and a raised block for steering correction

it use to have a dana 44 with the raised steering arm

the wobble was way worse with the 44 when i swaped to the 60 it has got alot better and now i am going high steer cross over i ordered it yesterday

i'm sure my wobble is comming from my 38 inch tsl's

put the cross over high steer kit on and its worse due to no stabilizer

i'm sure its coming from the tires

all my parts look to be in good shape

when i put the high steer arms on i added 2 washers to each side as spacers

my tires are just below half tread so i will run them down before buying new ones
i am going to torque every thing add the band aid fix stabilizers and hope for the best

Check your alignment. Check your air pressures. The lower the tire pressure the worse the DW will be. If the tires are not pointing in the same direction, they will fight each other.

:waytogo: Well said.......................:D my.02

I only have DW when i hit a bump or pot hole on the road. Im going to get the hydro assist ram and try that out. everything else is new..

I have an 85 long bed on 44 boggers with 14" wide weels and only 2.25" backspacing. Danna 60 front, crossover steering, and heavy duty tie rod setup ORD stuff. I had a severe case of death wobble, tried alignment, tripple stabilizer shocks, checked every friggin part in the whole front end for wear or any other crazy thing I had heard of. Even rebuilt the perfectly good Kingpins and shimmed the spring for a tighter fit. NOTHING WORKED! Finally tried hydro assist. CURED! Not the slightest sign of death wobble at any speed on any terrain.

My death wobble is killing me. It has come out of nowhere. I have the 10 bolt with factory alignment specs. Have dirven this thing all over with no trouble. Decided to rebuild the front end cause I had a few ball joints going bad. Everysingle thing in the front end was replaced and bang I got death wobble at 35!

New parts = Death wobble...WTF!

I run 38" swampers and pretty soft BDS springs and shocks, no sway bar, don't like steering stabilizers cause they rob me of steering power, of which I lack for now.

I wasn't about the read the entire post. Normally death wobble is cause by worn king pin springs in the Dana 60s. Try adding a shim the the upper and lower king pin springs to tighten them up. Cheap and easy. Or you could get new springs and shims from NAPA.

Let me tell you right up front, my WHOLE steering/front axle (D60) system is brand spanking new. Every part replacable I replaced BEFORE it ever saw the asphalt. ORD X-over/Hi-steer, new rotors, hubs EVERYTHING!! Even have 14" remote shocks.. No DW for about 2k miles without a stabilizer!!!! Then out of no where (the infamous pa. potholes), at a blistering 15mph, the thing shook like a wet dog. So much so that trying to stop it at a light, people moved back from the curb.

Shims, new parts, is in part - BS.... X-over hi-steer only adds and amplifies the DW.

Let the flaming run rampant but I solved the issue by removing the steering box (the brand new one as a matter of fact) and tighting the tolerances on the pitman shaft play (steering coupler side). Then compared the play of a stock box to the new tighter tolerance and poof... DW-b-gone in my case.

99.9% of DW on a 60, can be cured with some 30 cent fender washers found at home depot or lowes. Just slip 2 under each king pin cap and call me in the morning.
