Decision Time! My humble build! "Flexed" it, 5/21/09!

Ouch! I used a cherry picker a floor jack and creeper (yeah I know but w/e it worked) to slide my 14ff under my truck by myself but I definately could of used a hand...

Smart way to do it. My problem is the gravel driveway. Good work though!

I do appreciate your thoughts on my health, thank you! More so, thank you for your long time service to all of us stateside, and God Bless you and yours!:bow::bow:! Come home safe and sound!:usaflag:

Just got back from the Doc and Bone Cracker. Waiting to be approved for an MRI. Got a HUGE(100) prescription of Hydros and one for cyclobenzaprines! I ought to be able to get some sleep now. Every time I move in my sleep, I get snapped awake by pain. Not anymore, I hope. Still don't have much feeling in my left hand, except for the constant pins and needles. Hope that goes away soon too. Been told not to try to draw my bow or move heavy things. The shocking pain kind of limits me any way. Gotta go, wife is home and I need to play the pain alittle maybe to get a little. She likes to play the nurse!:D. Just gotta make sure the Ben-Gay and warming KY don't get mixed up:haha:.

My insurance co. okayed the referal for an MRI. I go in Fri. for that and an x-ray to make sure I have no metal in my eyes. Hope it goes well. I'm getting bored not doing anything. Hurts to move! Hopefully I'll start making some progress on my truck soon. With the help of friends of course! I got good ones!

I have bad memories of discovering, at 10PM, that the truck needed to move into the garage about 6" for the door to roll down -- and the front axle was still off. :doah: Half an hour of nearly killing myself resulted in some adventures with a four foot crowbar and furniture dollies... but the truck got in :deal:

Hope you heal up and the friends show up to help. Look forward to seeing some more pics of the progress. Are you finding it easy to do other than the lack of help? Curious because I might be swapping axles shortly and have never done it either.

Well, if you have lots of time, you could take the brakes and axle shafts out. You’ll be amazed how much lighter an axle is after you have taken that stuff off. (Re)install the axle housing and put the brakes on later. I have done it both ways, but if I’m doing an axle swap by myself, I’ll strip the axles. Now my nephew is old enough to help me if I give him a call.

So far it's been pretty much bolt in. The emergency brake lines are a little different but not insurmountable. Figuring out the angles for the drive shaft is going to be trial and error. I'm going from a 465/205 to a 700r4/208. I have about 6 diff. shafts and none are the right length. I will probably just swap in the whole drive train to make it work with what I have. I do plan on moving the front axle forward either 1" or 1 1/2" with ORD's zero rate. I hope the front shaft is still long enough. Thanks for the concern of my health. Hope I get the right pics up showing how it all goes. Time for bed now, Good Night Moon!:D

Good idea on disassembly! I will have to read up on that. I've never done it myself, and the axles (whole truck) sat for a few years in a field. The brakes etc. could probably use a going over. They were brand new when it was parked, so maybe just turning the rotors and drums will be enough. Don't know yet. Take care!

Another tip I could give for the front is to put the pumpkin on the floor-jack. Jack the housing up till the passenger’s side reaches the spring. The passenger’s side is going to go up first because of the long side is causing it to be off balance. That is okay. Try to line up the spring pin to the hole in the housing by moving the jack. Once you get the housing lined up to that spring pin; jack the housing up. The driver’s side will swing up. Aline the other spring pin. If the pin is off side to side; put a little upward pressure with the jack and hit the side of the spring with a dead-blow. It should go in. The housing is probably going to be tilted back and not lined up straight with the spring pins. Don't fret. Put the u-bolts on and tighten the u-bolts till the slack is gone. Drop the jack and reposition the jack toward the yoke and jack up till the spring pads are parallel to the springs. Tighten the u-bolts.
Two problems with your current back problem is to get the housing on the floor-jack and the gravel driveway. The gravel driveway can be solved with a piece of plywood, but you got to man handle that also.
Clear as mud?

why is it that when i click on your picture links or anybodys for that matter some page comes up that says im violating rules?

Unless they are posting a link to photobucket or something, you won't be able to see them without buying a membership here. Consider it a hosting fee because believe it or not, data transfer does cost for a website since they are usually allocated a certain limit and the more you use, the more it costs the web admin. Kind of like peak minutes with a cell phone and it varies with plans.

To be honest with you, that $25 I paid for a membership here has been more helpful than a Chiltons, GM manuals and every other place I have used. You think you are getting a lot of info with just a registered user account? I was amazed at how much more was opened up with a paid membership. If I have said it once, I have said it a thousand times "Best $25 I have spent in a long, long, long time."

<snipped a bunch to save space>

Thanks for the concern of my health. Hope I get the right pics up showing how it all goes. Time for bed now, Good Night Moon!:D

Hey, gotta look out after the sources of my info!!! Glad to hear you are finding things easy and I hope everything left goes equally well. Not saying I could do it, but your pics and info sure is getting me closer to that point so I really appreciate the knowledge you are giving out. Now heal up already and get back to work!!!:wink1: I got a gravel driveway, winter coming and don't know how to do the swap because you aren't done yet! :haha:

Seriously, not sure if I am going to swap axles yet (depends on the gearing in each), but the way you are presenting this info is really teaching me a lot and I appreciate that even if I don't end up swapping axles from my donor. I am learning a ton from this thread from you, JD and others so keep up the good work and get well soon.

Wow, learning from me, that's awesome, considering I'm an HVAC Tech. I'm glad you said so though. I'm not a great computer user. I figured out how to show my pics, but I don't know how to give info, then a pic, then info, then pic. I'm kinda giving what little I know, then showing pics of the partially finished product at the end of my post. Again, I'm no mechanic, but I am taking some pride in the fact that I am the only one to turn wrenches on this truck. I mean I have not paid anyone to do the work. I can't take all the credit though, I have great friends with shops and info that have helped alot. THe majority of my knowledge comes from Hanes/Chilton, and the most practical info has come from the guys on CK5. Their info and help has been priceless!:bow::bow:

To JDNobodi, that's kinda how I got the 14ff positioned. Yeah, the gravel driveway makes it tough. WHat I did was roll the axle over with the tires still installed, then took the one tire off, swiveled the tired side under the truck, then the plan was to skooch the end without the tire under the other side, but the axle fell off the jack.:yikes: That sucked. Lifting it back on is what probably screwed my back up. It wasn't till the next morning that the pain started.

Thanks to all you guys/gals out there for your help and concern.:waytogo::D

To troutbum mt, this is just another challenge for a guy with Polish blood, 6 concussions, who had a mother that smoked and drank during pregnancy. The gravel driveway, busy fall PMing furnaces for winter, and hunting season less than 2 weeks away just makes it more interesting.:surepal:Good luck with your project.:D

considering I'm an HVAC Tech.
Have I mentioned that I'm Polish, have had 6 concussions, and my mom smoke and drank during her pregnancy? I have lots of excuses for doing dumb things.:haha::doah:
She likes to play the nurse!:D. Just gotta make sure the Ben-Gay and warming KY don't get mixed up:haha:.
Drove it to dinner, and on the way home it started making some whirring noises that quickly became grinding noises that rapidly became quite god-aweful! Bits and pieces of metal in the rear differential can not be good for it.:doah:
I like people that can make fun of themselves and have a good attitude about life no matter how bad things get !!

Oh and sorry about being a HVAC tech....I can relate !!!

good luck with your project,,,

BTW at 51, I can relate to all of the aches and pains of swaping axles transmissions etc,,been there, done that,,,,still doing it....I'll own a 4x4 till I die.
these damn "kids" on here,,,their time is coming....they won't be young forever !! :haha::haha::haha::haha:

Yeah, I remember being young...................I think:thinking:. I never thought (that's apparent) that all those things I used to do would catch up with me, but I'm slower now too. But, boy do they ever. Not only will I always have a chevy 4x4, but I kinda miss the muscle cars too, new or old. As far as making fun of myself, I'm very comfortable with who I am. I have a great,(and VERY tolerant) wife, step-daughter,and friends. I love my job. Like my wife, my boss is a friend and is also very tolerant. I have a great life and have been Blessed. (I do wish I could figure out how to make money with my hobbies or just have people mail me cash for free) :dunno:

New News

First, I wimped out of my MRI Friday morning. WAY too confined. Been trapped in crawl spaces twice before. I know, I'm a pussy:(, and am pissed at myself for that. Next Thursday, I go for an open MRI with a bottle of Valium to try it again.:eek1:

After a week of light duty at work, doing nothing on my truck, and not shooting my bow, I am getting bored and am feeling useless:mad:.

So, I tried to shoot my bow. No go. I can't even move the string. My left arm has zero strength in it. The season starts Sat. the 18th, and I can't draw it. Almost in tears over that.:frown1:!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So much for the moping and pouting.

On a better note, I did get the D60 out of my other Blazer!:D Did it one armed, and by myself. Trying to get some use of my left arm using the wrenches after bolts are broken loose. I guess some range of motion is a plus. Figuring out how to get the calipers off was fun, never did them before, at least on a D60. I will need to get the rotors turned, lots of surface rust. Well, here's some pics:laugh:.
